Hi,

I'm a complete newbie to smartphones but enjoying getting used to my HTC Desire. It's an Orange branded one so may look at rooting it in the near future Wink

I've bought a simple Bluetooth keyboard off Ebay (think it's one of the Chinese mass made ones) but can't get it to connect with my phone Got it paired eventually). I looked through various sites but there's no recent information. I've also done a search on here and found nothing Sad  Has anyone manage to connect a bluetooth keyboard to a Desire?

Thanks

Vijay

Hi - here's a reply to HTC's support when they told me:

"...It is not possible to connect Bluetooth keyboard to HTC Desire HD..."

Attn:Tomas Thank you for your reply.

You said... "...It is not possible to connect Bluetooth keyboard to HTC Desire HD..."

Why does the HTC advertising say "...The phone supports the following Bluetooth Profiles: Bluetooth Headset, Handsfree, A2DP, FTP and AVRCP profiles, >>> as well as other standard profiles <<<.

Surely Bluetooth keyboards use a standard implementation of Bluetooth otherwise they wouldn't be able to advertise them as "Bluetooth Keyboards".

Why, is HTC's advertising so misleading?

Doesn't that break the law in England under the Trade Descriptions Act?

Description of the characteristics of goods, including their quality, quantity, and fitness for the purpose for which they are required. Under the Trade Descriptions Acts 1968 and 1972, making a false trade description is a criminal offence in English law. Applying a false trade description to goods is a "strict liability" offence.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_Descriptions_Act_1968

I eagerly await your reply.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Regards

As I understand it, phones with the HTC Sense UI have a proprietary Bluetooth stack, not the stock Android Bluetooth stack.  That's why HID keyboard apps like BlueInput and others do not work on HTC Sense phones.

The CyanogenMod ROM has a Bluetooth stack that does work for HID keyboards, but I think it lacks HTC Sense...

So seems we're stuck waiting for HTC to build a proper Bluetooth stack into the ROM, or you have to have a rooted phone and install a Sense-free custom ROM.

Hi all, I'm a newbie here & this is my first post.
Anyone got any updates on this? I've got an HTC Desire and would very much like to get a bluetooth keyboard working with it. I just joined another forum (which I mistook for this one -Looks the same but it's HTCDesireSForum.com, not HTCDesireForum.com!)
Someone has reported getting a Freedom Pro Bluetooth Keyboard for Android to work on a DHD (I guess that means Desire HD?) http://www.htcdesiresforum.com/htc-desire-s-accessories/success-freedom-pro-bluetooth-keyboard-for-android/

So does that mean somehow the Freedom Pro's software gets around the HTC's Bluetooth stack issue? Could the software work on a different bluetooth keyboard (e.g. one of the smaller Chinese ones which are on eBay)? And if it works on a Desire HD will it work on a standard HTC Desire?

Any assistance muchly appreciated...  Smiley

Freedom Pro does work in SIP mode, on HTC Sense ROMs, which the stock Desire ROM is.

It does not work in HID mode, which is what most other BT keyboards use.  Most keyboards don't have the option for using SIP - neither the iGo/ThinkOutside Stowaway nor the Freedom Mini work, as I have tried those too.

I am running LeeDrOiD v3, which is HTC Sense, and the Freedom Pro keyboard works fine for me in SIP mode with the Freedom Input driver (be sure to select the correct one).

Aside from the fact that the keyboard is almost twice as large as my phone, I like it a lot better than other keyboards.  It's nice to have a mostly-standard layout and spacing.  The number row is shifted over a bit, but it's still better than having to use a function key for numbers.

The core issue is that HTC Sense Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread ROMs have an older/restricted Bluetooth stack that does not support Bluetooth HID profile.  This is a HTC Sense Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread issue, who knows if/when HTC will change it.

Cyanogenmod 7 (CM7) supports Bluetooth HID profile, and other AOSP (non-HTC Sense) ROMs may as well.

If AOSP and Cyanogenmod don't make sense to you, likely you are using a stock Desire ROM, which is HTC Sense, and therefore you will need to find a Bluetooth keyboard that supports SIP.  Freedom Pro is the only one I know of.  Would be happy to find out about others though.

Thanks for your explanation bhiga, that clarifies why most bluetooth keyboards don't work on the Desire.
I've been trawling the net, weighing up contradictory reviews and comments in forums saying you can/can't pair a bluetooth keyboard with the Desire and haven't known whether the shell out for one or not!

I saw this on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110660536256&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT it looks a bit like a simplified (more affordable) Freedom Pro.
Says it works on Android 2.2 and the Bluetooth Specification is: Version 2.0 Class 2 and it's Broadcom (BCM2042). No idea what that means!
It doesn't say anything about whether it works in SIP mode or not.

What do you reckon? I don't really want to have to fork out £60-£70 for a bluetooth keyboard that will work with my 'phone. Suppose I could always try rooting it and flashing it with Cyanogenmod 7 but I'm a bit reluctant to do that in case I brick my phone. Plus I've got it how I want it now, with all my apps, widgets, wallpaper etc. in the right place.

Sorry for the delay - been a bit busy...

The Broadcom BCM2042 reference is simply the Bluetooth transceiver.  It tells you the transmission power (Class 2 = 20 meters), but it doesn't really tell you much about the Bluetooth software stack that uses the chip.  The Bluetooth stack is the part that determines what communication methods are understood.  It's similar to how on the same hardware, CM7 ROMs can "speak" HID while Sense ROMs cannot - the phone's firmware determines what "languages" it understands, so the same applies to the BT keyboard's firmware.

It'll work on Android 2.2 but not HTC Sense Android 2.2 - that's the key here...  I'm sure it works fine on non-HTC Sense Android 2.2 like Motorola or Samsung.  It's the price we pay for HTC Sense. Sad

Pretty much, if the keyboard does not explicitly say it supports Bluetooth SIP, it is very safe to assume it does not.

The usual giveaway is a hardware switch to change between HID and SIP mode, as the Freedom Pro keyboard has.

I don't know of any keyboards where SIP is the primary communication method.  HID is much more common, and that keyboard says it works with PS3 and PC/Mac, both of which use HID, so guarantee it has HID.  But again, it is highly unlikely that it supports SIP.

A pity, as it looks to be a nice form factor.  My only real gripe with the Freedom Pro is its size...

If you aren't comfortable with rooting and such, I would spend the extra money to get the Freedom Pro, or a keyboard the explicitly says it supports SIP protocol and works with HTC Sense Android phones.  As I tell people for work, "You pay either way - in time, or in cash."

Hope that helps!

Hey, thanks. That does help actually.
Still don't really understand why HTC Sense doesn't incorporate the same Bluetooth stack that it does on other Android devices. I ended up buying this on eBay for a bargain price! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280696647162&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I saw this article http://digiassn.blogspot.com/2010/01/getting-hp-foldable-bluetooth-keyboard.html and thought it'd be worth trying it out. I'll let you know how I get on.

Also there's this website http://www.o-learn.com/content/android-and-bluetooth-keyboard which gives some useful info and lists bluetooth keyboards which are supposedly compatible with Android.

Yeah, none of us knows why HTC seems to neglect the Bluetooth stack when they make the Sense builds...

Looking forward to hearing how you get along.  The Freedom Pro driver is free from Freedom Input, though I guess KeyPro might be useful to find a different SPP keyboard, or if you have Freedom and non-Freedom keyboards.

I hope someday HTC ditches their out-of-date BT stack and puts in the standard Android one... *fingers crossed - and cramped*

SUCCESS! After a bit of fiddling about (and some confusion with the pairing/connection process) I managed to get an HP Bluetooth Foldable Keyboard FA287A to work on my unrooted HTC Desire, using the Key Pro app! (I have it set up as a "Stowaway Shasta" as the HP keyboard isn't listed. Works OK tho.)

It's a bit of a tricky pairing process, would be great if it did it automatically and changed the input settings to "key pro" instead of "touch input" when you turn bluetooth on but these are minor niggles.
Am very chuffed. This keyboard was way cheaper than the Freedom Pro (even second hand ones) and feels just like a normal laptop keyboard.

The only downside is it doesn't appear to have a power on/off switch for some reason?

Great to hear!!

I agree - the process of "activating" the keyboard for use is ... annoying.  I too have to switch input method to get my keyboard to work.  Sometimes it reconnects automatically, sometimes I have to go into the Freedom settings, luckily it leaves a icon in the notification when in Freedom input mode.

Sounds like a winner!

I had the RC of cyanogens mod installed and I was able to pair and use a bluetooth keyboard with my phone. I've read that Bluetooth keyboards don't work with SenseUI due to some stupid Bluetooth bug. I can confirm that the keyboard won't pair and work when I'm using das BAMF ginger REMIX or the standard das BAMF gingerbread rom or OMFGB. Does anyone know which roms Bluetooth keyboards will work with?
Also is there any way to make it work with sense? I tend to like the new stuff in sense3."

Can anyone from this forum officially confirm or debunk the above quote I found regarding this issue?
