Hi! I am considering the HTC Desire.
Can you use the HTC Desire to provide internet to your laptop by connecting them?

(I am thinking that this would eliminate the need for a wireless dongle)

Yes, there's a tethering function in the Desire. You just plug in the phone to the PC/laptop, and when the option comes out, choose tethering.

Or use Desire as WiFi Hotspot, then you need no USB cable at all. Very simple and easy to use, and you can give access to others as well through your Desire if wanted.

Well, some would prefer not to broadcast and receive. The battery drain is enormous.

I haven't come across such an app yet... but I think it isn't that possible because the USB port on the Desire is a USB host, not a USB slave.

mmm..
Actually I'm new with android and today I realized that Android can't detect and connect to Ad Hoc Connection (via Wifi) with laptop, but this guy (link below) claimed that he has succeed in doing it. I haven't tried it myself, since it need to be rooted which I haven't and I'm still learning to get to use with Android.

Can anybody confirm his invention?

Should work, but it is not for the HTC Desire.

Use this ROM to get it:

You have this back to front. The Desire can only act as a USB slave, not a host.
This has nothing to do with if it could use a PC as a gateway.
