I understand that true voice dialing on the Desire is not possible at the moment but I can't believe that there is a simple app out there that will do simple voice dialing even if it requires some inter action with the phone.

I have used the "Market Place" I can't find anything suitable.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm missing this kind of feature myself ... I mean ... It has a Mic, why not use it.?

Anyway ... I found a sort of workaround ... not the best, but close enough to it ...

Goto the " Market " on the Desire ... The App is called : Choice Dialer Plus Free

It will search your contacts by " voice ".!! - Very handy, pretty accurate to 80%

I have just put the custom 2.2 froyo rom on my desire and it has voice dialing. It works quite well....not amazing....but pretty decent.
I think the froyo OTA update is due shortly. I am very happy with froyo at the moment and recording in 720p videos.  Grin

Hey, I am first time forum user and Desire owner. I have used my voice search function for Google to find a contact, if that helps. I just said "ring <name>" and my contact came up, on a few occasions anyway. Other times I ended up on a google search page.

Wait... will the 2.2 be publicly released? Since I am not planning to Root my Desire when I get it.

Thanks Lethal, that works pretty well for me (even considering my common accent).
If I can get my coverage problems sorted, I think I am going to enjoy this phone.

Hate to disappoint you guys, but HTC's OTA update for froyo does NOT include voice dialing.  Angry

What's worse is anyone who updates to this latest official release can no longer root their phone to get voice dialing. We've been screwed by HTC and I'm not sure why. No voice dialing and no option to go to another custom ROM if you update.  Sad

Try Vlingo, do a google search on it, havent got it myself but came across this when i was looking  Wink

Looking at the screenshots this requires you to touch the phone (the same as all the others I have seen).

Apparently voice dialing over bluetooth is only available to North American users.

I have seen other posts by other users saying the same thing.

I have tried a few other 3rd party ones, but either they don't work over bluetooth, or the ones that do require the android to already have a bluetooth voice dialer active on the phone for them to piggy back off.  Embarrassed

Just put Vlingo on my new desire and the "in car" mode is excellent, and it's a free app so give it a go

Just downloaded Vlingo and it works so well. Better than google voice.

I just bought a Motorola HX550 Bluetooth headset. I use Vlingo on the phone and the Vlingo "inCar" option. Voice dialing seems to work fine through the headset. As time goes by I will test it under different situation to see what other voice command functionality it has but everything seems to be working fine so far. I have seen many different reviews from people about bluetooth devices and the SR and the HX550 seems to have few or no issues.
