Is there no way to save the data on the phone and avoid doing in effect a factory reset?
If I am looking at doing a factory reset, I may as well take it back to O2 and get a new phone.
I would like to try installing a non-corrupt update.zip as I'm hoping that would be able to fix the problems, or have I misunderstood what's gone wrong?

Well, since this thread is about your phone being bricked, the assumption would be that you can no longer access the phone. If you could, you can try out MyBackup Pro to do some apps backup, but there's a limit to that, of course.

This same thing has just happened to me. Is there anyway to fix the phone without doing a factory reset?
Could someone send me the O2 branded update.zip file which is apparently on the root of the SD card? (PM me if you can).
I'd like to try and save the data on the phone if I can.
O2 and HTC aren't proving helpful and I don't see why an update they sent out should cause me to lose all my data.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Gutted for you, mate.
O2 were ultra helpful to me, so maybe just call them back and talk to someone else.
