I am bitterley disappointed with both! I bought an HTC Desire for my consultancy business. After 6 months my Desire failed to boot up and kept turning off. To my mind, a software issue. I took it back to CPW who said theyd sent it back to HTC.

Eventually after 3 weeks I got a call from CPW telling me that I would have to pay £180.00 to have the phone repaired. The reason being that the camera lens was scratched/cracked and that they couldnt repair the software issue without mending the lens (despite the camera working perfectly well!).

I've looked at other very similar issues that other users have experienced and there are a lot of them!

After spending two days arguing the issue, I've given up on both and gone back to a cheaper, better phone by a different manufacturer. My thoughts? AVOID!

They are most certainly conning you. Should have come to us for the info, because they shouldn't need to repair the camera. It is a well documented issue we call "Random Reboots" that we suspect is caused by the mobo.

I suggest that you get into contact with the authorities because they have fixed various other phones under the same problem and situation.

A scratch on the camera lens has nothing to do with the warranty related to your problem.  It also wouldn't affect the repair.

Normally HTC's official repair centre will determine the cause of the problem (in your case I'm guessing it's going to be the motherboard) and then they'll decide if it is covered by warranty (which it will always be if the problem isn't the result of dropping the phone in the water or on the ground).
Once they determined it is covered by warranty, they will restore the entire phone to as-new condition free of charge.  I've seen scratched screens and even the entire aluminium frame being replaced under warranty because the pone wouldn't work anymore due to a fault in the motherboard.  So a scratch on the camera voiding your warranty is very unlikely.

Sounds to me like Carphone Warehouse is trying to con you indeed.  Personally, I'd give them a call, tell them that I have documentation on more than a dozen reports of the same reboot problem and threaten to sue them if they don't fix it under warranty.

Hi, it always annoys me when CPW show their true colours time after time. I had a screen issue with my Sony Ericsson W995 and took it in, after 2 weeks I phoned them to see when I could pick it up, they had lost it! The next 4 weeks were spent phoning the repair center, finally they found it, replaced the screen and I got it back. I noticed dust between the screen and LCD, but was never going to send it in again, ended up selling it on ebay and buying this. I got no help from trading standards either, I will never go there again, that's for sure. I will pay more for better service 1st.

CPW are notorious shisters, lazy, useless, crap customer service and totally unhelpful when you need them.

CPW are the biggest load of shites i have ever come across, if they were the last mobile phone supplier i would rather go without !!!!. To say i do not like them is an understament.

Anyway, the camera lens is under the rear cover, if that is scratched a replacement cover will put that right.

Set to sticky, in case people come here while gathering info on the phone.  At least they'll know where not to buy it.

I have also had bad experiences with CPW. I once returned a phone to them and after having it for 3 weeks they told me it couldn't be repaired and they would provide me with a refurbished replacement. I was horrified when they tried to give me a very battered phone which I refused as the phone I had returned was in mint condition.

I have since had faulty SE and Samsung phones and no matter which retailer I have got them from I have contacted the manufacturers direct and sent the phones direct to them for repair and it's never been a problem.

Don't know if this is possible with HTC (do they have their own repair centre in the UK?) but when I get mine if it develops any faults I will definitely be trying to return it direct to HTC.

HTC does indeed have a regular service centre they work with.  You can contact HTC via their site to book in your phone and make all arrangements to get it repaired.  So no need to go through CPW or any other shady dealerships.  In fact Chop could pick up his Desire from CPW and contact HTC themselves.  I bet it would be a warranty repair then.

That being said, I'm happy about my regular store, so I wouldn't bother with contacting HTC.  If I were to have a problem, I can just drop mine off and pick it up once it's fixed.

To put another side of the story, I've been buying phones from CPW for some years without problem - I've bought 6 phones from them, IIRC.

I had a SE phone that developed a fault. The battery wouldn't charge even though all the indications were that it was charging. I took it back for warranty repair. Initially the shop assistants tried to convince me it was an issue with the charger and gave me a new charger to try (like I hadn't tried several chargers already). I went back the next day to explain the new charger hadn't worked and they took the phone, got it fixed and I had it back, working, within the week.

Regards,

Mike
