HTC Desire A8181 - HT08

Hi All,

I'm new to the Android world and am playing with my new HTC desire for past couple of days. I'm on Orange network and have similar problem with the internet connection. I get connection for few seconds and then it drops. I've tried so many different ways and have called Orange customer services to update the settings on my phone so many times but nothing helped.

My phone came with Android 2.2 installed and is unlocked. So, I put my Vodafone SIM in the phone (from my previous contract that's still active and has unlimited internet). First day, the Vodafone SIM appeared to keep the connection up but then I started experiancing same issue with Vodafone SIM as well (here, l'd like to mention that my Vodafone internet connection is very stable on my old blackberry).

So, my conclusion so far is either all HTC desire handsets are buggy or my handset is faulty(however it works perfectly on wifi connection). I love the phone otherwise but I've got into habbit of using internet heavily and loosing connection on HTC desire is really annoying. Any help to solve this problem is greatly appreciated.
Orange's version of the Desire has a fault with the radio firmware. Solution is to root and install a custom firmware. This affects only Orange ROMs, and since I don't have access to such a phone (donations will be put to good use, I promise), I can't confirm it.

I have a HTC Wildfire but have been having similar problems with 3G connectivity.
In my opinion it is the GSM/WDCMA auto setting that causes the problem - it doesn't seem to work very well. My office is in Central London and has very good signal, including 3G signal. But for some reason, although my display shows a 3G conection, it often doesn't seem to be able to download data when I want it to, and I get a connection error message.

However, I've found that if I switch to the WCDMA only setting, it works fine.

Shame that I have to do this for it to work but at least I can get it to work now! I'm not sure whether this is just a general issue with a GSM/WCDMA auto setting or whether it is specific to HTC phones. Anybody got an answer to that?
Yes, I have an answer for you. Wrong forum. Seriously, Wildfire does not share the same hardware with Desire. So, while your solution might work for the short run, 2G is sometimes better than no connection at all.

1. I am india facing the same problem, i.e. sometimes the 3g connection is lost but it does not automatically come back until I check and uncheck one of the following settings:
1. Turn on Wifi
2. Mobile Data

2. However there is important point to note that I have been using the phone with same connection for the past 4 months and the problem has been encountered only lately, therefore it must be related to some software changes.
3. Recently I brought my dad's Samsung Galaxy S and My Desire with me both having 3g connectin from the same service provider and sometimes and I must say very few times, did the problem occur in desire while it did not occur on samsung galaxy s. To be noted both are running android 2.2
4. Few days back I had shifted some applications to sd card which I had not done before and I do have a feeling that something relating to applications could have been the cause.
5. I did contact the HTC India Support Center as well, after researching they replied to turn off and turn on the "Always on Mobile Data" option and it should work. They said if it is not resolved by this the problem will definitely be fixed by doing a hard reset not from within the phone but the ones using volume controls.

Hoping this helps. Someone in the forum did a hard reset I remember, did it resolve the problem. Also I did notice decrease in occurence of this problem today. So I am not going to do a hard reset immediately. Will observe for few days to see if problem fixes by itself, else will do a hard reset.

Hi there,

I experiencing a similar problem. I live in the Netherlands, I have an HTC desire with adroid 2.2
I haven't used my 3g for some time this month because I was over my data limit and didn't want to pay to much extra. today I tried to turn it on and it did not work. The 3g/H symbol never appeared. I called my profider and they asked what my settings where and everything was in order. He told me to reboot and remove the battery for a couple of minutes. Having done this I turned it on and all my widgets on the main screen where all in weird places, removed or placed there without me putting it there.
Another guy at the customer service of my provided suggest I should go back to factory settings if nothing worked but I haven't done that because it would mean installing all my aps, data etc again.

-I did use a lot of wifi during the period I didn't use 3g, but I don't think that's the problem
because I always used them both.
-I did use aps like advanced task killer, data counter, wifi/bluetooth/3g switches or widgets.

I tried some of the solutions on this forum but they either didn't work or weren't explained properly.
Hope someone has found the cause for this problem and a solution of course Wink

greeting,

Michiel

Hello everyone, (HTC Desire, HTC Desire 3G Connection Problem, "HTC Desire 3G Connection", "HTC Desire Connection")

Continuing my reply from where I left yesterday. I performed the hard reset yesterday night without even restoring the backed up settings, still I continue to experience this problem. Using the same sim I do not see this problem in my dad's galaxy.

The customer care told to contact service center, but I do not think they will be able to help much. Maybe if they replace the Circuit Board, it might fix. What I do not understand is where this problem came from, because for 3 Months it worked perfectly.

Switching between airplane more of checking unchecking mobile data connection restores the 3g signal and data connection.

Sometimes when it does not connect on checking mobile data setting, it gives error "incorrect apn setting" and moments later on retrying connects without problem using the same apn. And for 3 months prior the same settings existed so I do not know what the heck is going. Htc please fix this and give us OTA update. Please

Hey All,

Ok I put my phone back to it's original factory settings and it is working fine again. It takes a bit of time to get all of your aps again, but at least you can use it the way it was meant to be used.

greetings,

Michiel

Hi Michiel,

You say its working fine after restoring it to factory settings. You mean you are no longer experiencing the mobile data connection issue. Did you hard reset using option from settings or using the volume hardware keys. I did using volume hardware keys because the customer care executive told me to do so but I am still facing the problem.

Thanks and Regards,
Rahul.

Hi Rahul,

I used
settings - SD & Phone storage - Factory data reset.

I thought it would delete all my files on my sd card but it left the mp3's, photo's, roms. but my contacts where gone so make sure to make a back up.

It still working fine for me. I switched it on and off several times and used wifi in between. If the problem arises again I'll let you know.

Hope it helps you as well, good luck.

Michiel
