I have had an HTC Desire via T-Mobile UK for a couple of months. It runs Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense interface. I have made no modifications to the phone. This evening the phone would not turn off so I removed the battery. Then it would not boot.

When I press the power button, the screen comes on, the phone vibrates (once) and I get the red ring -- and that's it. It sits with a blank screen apart from the red ring/disc.

I have tried removing the battery (that's the only way to switch it off), removing memory card and SIM. Still nothing. Then I tried a factory reset by clearing the memory, which appeared to work -- but no improvement. It remains stuck at the red disc.

Is my phone goosed? Is this a hardware fault?

The only thing I did before this problem was to try to install Swype using a APK file via my memory card and installing a third party app installer. The app installer did not find the APK file on my memory card so I couldn't install Swype - but I noticed a lot of forced closes before I tried to switch off. I presumed switching off the phone would resolve this. Then my problems began... Sad

Sounds like the OS is so messed up it can't run anymore.  I doubt it will make a difference, but you could try to do a hard reset with the phone off.  If you haven't done so alread.  Looks to me like you tried it.

Quote from: HTC
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.

With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER.
Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.

If that doesn't solve it, I'm afraid HTC will have to sort it out themselves.  Either way, I hope you have a backup of your data, contacts etc.  Anything on the phone WILL be gone.

Thanks, but I have done several resets using this procedure. No improvement.

How does the OS get hosed? It's in (EP)ROM so an app can't screw it. It has to be a hardware fault.

I'm really surprised the "red ring of death" (copyright Bobby Elliott, 2010) is not more common. Maybe it will be in time with Desires.

An app can't screw it, but an app installer just might be able to.  Being in an EPROM doesn't mean it can't be altered/overwritten.  The presence of "EP" in EPROM says it all really.

Seeing as resets didn't solve it, I reckon it's time to have it checked by HTC themselves.  Write down the IMEI number before you turn it in.  If it's the same IMEI when it comes back, it was a software problem.  If the IMEI is changed, that means that they changed the entire main board, which would indicate a hardware problem indeed.

We might be able to use that kind of info in the future, if only to diagnose such serious problems more easily.

Yep, it's going for repair on Monday. I'll report back on the outcome. Thanks for trying to help.

OK. I promised to report back when the problem was resolved.

I got the phone back yesterday, one month and three days after I sent it for repair. The company I sent it to (the one I had the warranty with) could not fix it so sent it to HTC.

The device has a new IMEI, which tells me that the motherboard was replaced. It was, therefore, a major hardware fault and not an OS/software fault.

I'm not sure if it was a coincidence that I was messing around with non-standard software (using a non-Market source) or whether this goosed my mobo but my mobo was most certainly goosed.

So, for posterity, the red ring of death on an HTC Desire (and possibly some other handsets) is, indeed, a ring of death. The phone is f*cked.

Thanks for the update.  Let's hope this one keeps working.

As for the risk of using non-market apps : always look for comments before you install  stuff.  That should put your mind at ease or warn you of bad apps.

Yes, I was being naughty trying to force-install Swype onto my HTC Desire. But still surprised it fried my mobo.

Was it Swype_1.60.36.8214_WVGA.apk that caused the problem ?

I was just about to load this up, when I came across your tale of woe, and I thought I'd best check before I have a go.....

I'd really like to get Swype on the Desire - but not at the expense of bo##*xing it up!!

It was Swype 1.16, so it was a much earlier version. But there is not an official version for the Desire and, after my experience and being phone-less for five weeks, I will not be installed it until there is an official release via the Market.

For all you people who (like me) loved swype, it doesn't hurt your phone. Much. The install is huge for a KB app, but it is totally worth it. Like advertised, it is a whole new dimension to text-input on a touchscreen enabled device.
