Where did you buy it from?
i.e. if the phone came from the US, or another country, it may not match the 3G frequencies used in the UK.

Otherwise check:
menu, Settings, Wireless & networks, Mobile networks, Network mode
and confirm that "GSM / WCDMA auto" is selected.

ric323, Thanks for the reply. It is a UK phone and the settings are as you suggested. Any other ideas? Anyone?

Does this help? In the last 5 minutes I have swapped my Sim Card to my old HTC Wildfire and the 3G / H shows as soon as Wi Fi is turned off. Double checked all the settings and they are the same on both phones but, No 3G on the Desire? Please help or this will drive me mad and I will have to sell it on.

Please check the exact model number of your phone.
menu, Settings, About phone, Phone identity

What is the full line shown under "Model number" ?

Hey guys and girls time to share. Unlocked phones do not know which network they are going to be on so, Google is your friend find the 3G settings for your network enter them into the phone manually and away you go. I knew it was not the phone and I knew it was not the sim. Easy when you know how. When a phone is unlocked you can use and sim for basic tasks Wi Fi will work but if you want 3G and MMS you need to do as above.
