Just had this exact same problem, with the loud speaker being the default when i dial a number, even the car mode automatically came on and i haven't connected to a car cradle BUT it did happen after i charged the phone via the cigarette lighter in the van.
All i have done after reading an earlier post on here, is take the battery out while the phone was still ON, left it out for about a minute and put it back in and everything seems back to normal (so far). I'll post if the problem reappears.
I think they call this a soft reset.

Hey guys, I had the car mode problem a few weeks back and it is the direct cause for the Speaker problem.

To permenently (spelling?) stop car mode (until you choose to re activate ) heres what to do:

On a blank square of homescreen, long press as you would to add an app or widget.

Press 'Shortcut'
Scroll Down and press 'Settings'
Press 'Car Dock'
This will take you back to your home screen, with a new padlock icon
Press the 'Car Dock' App and Uncheck 'Auto-launch'
Car Mode solved.
Only thing now is the damn speakerphone issue.
Hope this helps. xx

Hi all !

I have been stuck for 2 weeks on this issue.

I have tried all those things :
- Switch off and then switch on the phone
- Remove and reinsert the battery
- Remove and reinsert the SIM Card
- Clean up the USB connector (and there were lots of dusts inside)
- Hard reset to the factory settings

Nothing has solved the problem.

BUT I have found a SOLUTION and also a process to see if you have the same problem as me :
1) Create a shortcut on your home screen and add this shortcut : Shortcut -> Parameter -> Car dock (the icon is a padlock)
2) Click on this shortcut and enable Auto start feature
3) A little car icon will appear in the status bar if there is a short circuit at that moment
4) Take your mini usb cable and plug it into the phone usb connector (without connecting the cable to an electrical outlet nor your PC, we don't want to charge the phone, in fact it doesn't matter but I advice you to not charge it during the process)
5) Now track if the car icon is present, if it is, just move up and down and left and right the cable to check if it's not a hardware short circuit like it is for me (!!). If the car icon appears and disappears during the process while you are moving the cable, then it's a hardware short circuit problem (nothing to do with some kind of software bug as mentioned by some people).

To fix the problem permanently you have 2 choices :
5.1) Take your phone back to the shop
5.2) My solution if you are a lazy man like I am : use the cable to twist correctly the male connector (the one inside the phone) to the correct position. For me the correct position was : lay down your phone on a table, screen upwards, you must twist the connector upwards too. The direction to twist the connector is from the bottom (the table) to the up (the screen) = If you take your phone in front of you and you are looking at the screen, twist the connector towards yourself.

I have fixed the problem this way.

I hope you will be able to fix it too.

Jérémy.

I've been having this same problem - changing the Car Port shortcut to not automatically on hasn't fixed anything, and all calls are automatically going to speakerphone.

I stupidly bought my phone on ebay (it was listed as brand new and was not - what a pain THAT has been), and so I doubt I'll have any manufacturers warranty coverage.

Anyone know of a software option to fix this, or if I'll be able to find a local repair shop to fix the USB contact issue?

Thanks!

regardless of whether you are the first owner or not, the phone has a 2 year manufacturers warranty, you will be fine.

i know this because i bought my phone 2nd hand on ebay and have returned it for repair without issue. if they ask for proof of purchase send them your paypal receipt.

I am having the same problem HOWEVER I brought my phone back to the Carphone warehouse for repair, thinking that all ye nice people were making a valid point, all I wanted was a replacement Sad alas the HTC guys inform me today that my HTC phone has a moisture problem and is not covered by warantee.  Now i have had this phone less then 3 months, my previous phone i had for nearly 4 years, i was reluctant to upgrade to a smart phone in the first place, i know for a fact i havent left it out in the rain, dropped it in a sink or a pint.  I'm currently writing up my thesis so i havent moved very far from my desk since i bought the precious thing!!  Does it not sound like a coincidence that I send back my phone with a little note saying i did some research and i think it may be a loose circuit connection apparently a common problem with HTC phones??? Does anyone have any suggestions, i am honestly out of options, i rang them back today stating i was'nt accepting a "moisture problem" as an excuse, i know myself having a smart phone for the first time, that i actually went to the bother of taking care of it, bought an entire protection kit and everything, i am incredibly annoyed with HTC and this treatment  Angry

I have the same issue with my HTC Desire. The speaker is auto-on when I make and receive calls. I was also getting the "car mode" coming on when I first turned on the device.

I have blogged about fixing the car mode issue here: http://techygypo.blogspot.com/2011/09/android-starts-in-car-mode.html. My phone didn't have the short-cut option that was previously described in this thread.

A lot of posts about the speaker issue state the USB connection as being a problem. I think this is almost certainly right. But before you go through the ball-ache of sending it back, make sure there is no material (lint from clothes) in the connection which may be shorting it.

It looks like I will be sending mine back too Sad

Dude why is there no cover on the USB port Huh Can someone in HTC respond to how u can guarantee a phone with no protection against "lint" getting into a USB port which plainly does not have a 100% perfect connection with the circuit board?

I solved the issue by hard resetting the phone. Now there are two ways to reset your HTC phone. One is from settings and other by pressing the buttons. After doing the button way the USB connection seems to be working for me.

Oh and by the way this also works in case of toggling car mode -

I tried to make concessions to the connector and coordinate, found that the mode of the car to open and close all the time. When I left I pull the USB coordinates, and it is very gentle, ever since.
