I've just been re-doing my phone and had the same problem so I used Easus Partition Master (home edition is free) to set my SD card up as follows:

1) FAT32 - size of SD card minus size of EXT3 partition
2) EXT3 - I set mine to 512MB which should be fine for most people but you can go up to 2GB.

Further to my earlier message, the link for shipped ROMs is now:

Hi guys!  Great thread you've got here.  Thanks to Sakai and all the contributors. Smiley  Anyway, here's my story.  I have a 15-month old Desire which I rooted about a month ago.  I have tried several roms and am now running Oxygen 2.3.2 with most of my apps moved to my sd card. Recently, I am experiencing rapid battery drain - about 3 hours or so from full charge.

So my question is - is this anyway related to rooting or installing a new rom?  How do I check if it's my battery that's going bad (oh, and I reset battery stats every time I change roms) or something is wrong with my rom install?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Hi thanks for the rooting tutorial.

I have rooted with the Leedroid, and everything seems ok.

Except I still only have about 49mb left on phone memory.
And it keeps asking me to do a su binary update?

Why I try to do this is says:

This updater cannot update the su binary on phone that have some kind of write protection system like S-on. yuou can continue to use superuser with your outdate binary, or supdate su with Rom manger??

Any help will be gratefully received.

Rob,

S-Off (security-off) is a different thing to rooting and reprogramming ROMs. IIRC I used Revolutionary to S-Off mine but Google will tell you all about it.

As for the shortage of memory, did you set up an EXT3 partition as well?

'Quick System Info Pro' gives a nice straightforward display of memory usage. It should show 'A2SD storage' as the second entry, which is your EXT3 partition.

Hi SimonP,
I do indeed have a second entry which is labelled A2SD storage.
Total;69.92Mb,  free:30.03mb

Is that abour right?

Hmm, did you only set up a 70MB EXT3 partition? It looks a bit odd to me as I'd have thought you'd set up at least a 512MB partition to make it worthwhile. I wonder if it's just showing the internal memory area there?

If it was me I'd re-do the procedure to make sure it's all set up correctly.

Yes, I think you're right. I'll re-do it the weekend.

On the rooting, did the technology improve to make it simple.
In the link below, it looks very simple and one of my friends say that it is so.

http://techspalace.blogspot.com/2011/10/perm-root-htc-desire-gingerbread-233.html

Is there any issues in the above procedure.
I just want to have more internal storage and the following procedure says so.
http://techspalace.blogspot.com/2011/10/increase-free-space-on-htc-desire.html?showComment=1328946809775#c2889029530470755707

Need your expert guidance here.
Thanks.

Not sure, why there was no reply for my query. Anyway, now I have rooted my phone. But I used the other simple guide than the one here.

sakai4eva has done a wonderful job in writing this guide. I like the casual style and attention to detail. However, I feel it was a bit scary, due to which I shied away from rooting for almost 18 months. A warning cum disclaimer at the start and the cautions towards risk of bricking or something going wrong put me off.

I suppose we need to separate this article into two - one on rooting and the other on flashing a custom ROM. The rooting article can then be updated with a simple guide, that is based the latest improvements in the technology which makes the process very simple. A disclaimer can be stated at the end in a more friendly/reassuring way.

Good to hear that you rooted it OK but I disagree, the disclaimer and warnings are absolutely vital. You are immediately voiding your warranty and it is quite possible to 'brick' your phone if it goes wrong so anyone writing such a guide would be daft not to cover themselves, legally if not morally. It's not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced.
