The manual states the following for making sure your backup facility is enabled:

Checking if automatic backup is enabled
1. Press HOME > MENU, and then tap Settings.
2. Scroll down the screen, and then tap Privacy > Back up my data.
3. Make sure that the Back up my data check box is selected.

I canít for the life of me find the Privacy option.  Is this an omission with Android 2.2?

This is why I use the "my backup" app'. Give it a try.
