I can vouch for this .. it worked on my Desire.

It only takes a few minutes once the Desire if fully charged ...

The Following was taken from a thread on the xdadevelopers forum

--------------------------------------------

Hi *******, I understand your concern regarding battery life on your Nexus One device. The following steps should significantly extend the battery life on your phone. Please connect the phone to the charger with the phone powered on, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green, indicating the device is fully charged. Disconnect the phone from the charger, and power it off. Reconnect the phone to the charger with the phone powered off, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green. Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on. Once the phone is powered completely on, power it off again and reconnect it to the charger until the notification LED is green. Disconnect the phone, power it on, and use it. You need to use this sequence only once. If the issue of battery life on our phone persists, I recommend you contact our HTC accessory department directly.

--------------------------------------------

Source :  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755903

In English ..

1. Power on your Desire then connect to your Charger and Fully charge until the LED changes Green.
2. Disconnect your phone from the charger and then power off.
3. Reconnect your phone to your charger with the power off and wait for the green LED.
4. Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on.
5. Once the phone has fully booted / ready to use ...  power off again.
6. With the power off connect the phone to the charger and wait for the green LED.
7. Disconnect from the Charger then power on and use normally.

Anythng is worth a go ...  it does not work for everyone ..   Give it a go and let us know if it worked for you ...

Didn't do anything in my case, but there are plenty of people who claim a huge difference.

I assume the Desire works out the battery's capacity over time, and this may only work with phones that haven't figured it out by themselves yet.  But I haven't found any real data to back up that theory.

If the led notification is the tiny ORANGE coloured dot in the top right hand side of my phone, that only comes on when the charger is plugged in, it stays the orange colour until I unplug it. The battery is showing a green full charge though.

Tricks seems to work. I accidentally did this when I was at home and worried about the battery, fully charging it, using a bit, then fully charging it again. After the 2.2 update, it seems to have increased the battery life

One question, does over-charging really hurt the battery? I usually leave the phone charging overnight while I sleep

I'm no expert but I think it means you have a better idea when you're battery reallyneeds a charge and not when an uncalibrated one does.
Eg - you wouldn't want to charge a 'drained' battery when it in fact still has, say, 30% life left. Overcharging a battery makes it less reliable/usable over it' lifetime. As an aside that's also why it's not advisable to keep using one's laptop using mains power because you're not allowing the battery to have it's charge/drain cycle. I used to do this with my work laptop and when I went to use it without mains all I could get (from 'fully charged' to 0%) was about 30mins max.

There's a great deal of confusion surrounding Li-ion batteries because people are generally used to the old Ni-Cad ones, which could take a whole lot more abuse but wore out much quicker even if treated right and had a worse power/weight ratio. (which is very important in cellphones.  You don't want to be walking around with a 6 lbs phone, do you?)

Lithium-Ion batteries are sensitive to both over- and undervoltages.  Charge it too far, and you'll damage it.  Drain it too far, and the damage is even worse.  Basically if you do either one, you'll be screwed.

Luckily most manufacturers build in safeguards to their chargers and electronics to prevent either option.  When the battery reaches a preset voltage, either the charger or the device will interrupt the charging process.  Same with the draining, if the phone decides that the voltage becomes too low, it'll shut down.

As for keeping the laptop/phone on a charger or removing the battery from it alltogether : I wouldn't do eiher.  Let the battery go through at least 2 FULL cycles every month (charge it to 100%, then drain it untill the phone/laptop shuts down, then fully charge it again).  Apart from those few cycles, you CAN pretty much keep it on the mains power.

A friend of mine recently bought a second-hand laptop from his GF's cousin.  The guy had it on the mains power for 3 years and had taken the battery out all that time "to preserve it".  Needless to say, it was at 0.0V when he re-inserted it and sold the laptop.  After a full charge, the laptop depletes it in less than 5 minutes.  And it's not improving either.

-----

How does this translate to the Desire?

easy, if your battery is low and you're not really expecting an important call, let it go on untill the phone shuts down by itself, then recharge it completely.  Make sure you do this at least twice every month.  Apart from that, you can pretty much use it as you like.

I think this may have worked for me!

I did it 2 days ago and thought nothing of it, fell asleep last night with it off charge, didnt kill any aps, 3G/WiFi on etc... (which is usually a guaranteed dead phone to wake up to) and still had 65% battery when I woke up.

Its worth a bash!

Same here now.  After a factory reset I tried the calibration again, and this time it did have an effect.  I'm up from 55 hours to an estimated 80 hours.  Occasional use, 3G on 24/7.

If I really start using the phone, the battery level still goes down at an alarming rate.  But that's a price I'm willing to pay for this kind of processing power.
