so i want to rick roll my friend, and my plan was to change his ringtone to the song, but only when he gets a call from me.
Problem is that he always has his phone on vibrate.. so i need to find a way to keep it on vibrate, but still have it play the song when i call him.

Also, what format does the song have to be?

The Desire supports most common formats.  mp3, wma, etc.

There's no real way to let it play a ringtone when it's on vibrate mode, but there is a workaround.

Basically you'll need to set the phone up to play ringtones and vibrate.
Then you'd have to put that horrible song on his SD card and select it as your personal ringtone (through your contact card).
You'll also need another ringtone that doesn't make any noise (shouldn't be too hard if you know how to use audio editing apps or even Windows movie maker.  That would be the normal ringtone for all the others.

It's a lot of work for a little prank, and he'll see that the phone is not on vibrate anymore when he looks at the screen.  So there's a big chance the prank will fail completely.

woah.. that "no sound" ringtone idea is great Cheesy

i'll have another friend of mine help me with this (he has the same phone), to make sure it works right.
we already tried putting the song as a ringtone though, but the phone wouldn't recognize the file. I think it was in mp3 format but it didn't come up when he went to pick a ringtone :s
