Had my Desire for less than 2 days now.  I've changed the ringtone by uploading one that I have used for several years on other phones however I can't find a way to change the SMS text alert tone.  Can't find anything on the phone or in the manual.

Is this possible?

Thanks

Isn't this done by changing the Notification sound in Settings->Sound & Display->Notification sound?

I found choosing a sms tone limited, untill I used a free app called Tone Picker mp3.  Create a folder on your SD card, pop your desired ringtones (mp3) in there and use the app to associate a tone.

Hope that helps!

Done that.  Works a treat.  Thanks.

Shame it is only possible to define tones for calls and notifications.  It woudl be good if the SMS notification tone and email notification tone could be different to each other.  Or am I missing something?

I use SMS Popup  .. This allows you to allocate a different Tone for text messages.

For SMS I use Hancent and this allows you to configure different tones for different contacts as well as the colour of the LED and symbol that appears in the notification bar and the vibrate pattern.

although the method that was recomendied worked verry well and was simple...
it keeps changeing back to a default tone.. my guess is it seems to happen after useing the music player, as i think it cannot access the sd card at the same time...
i cant figure out how to access the core files from the sd card to transfer files to diffrent sections of the phone, and think putting the required tones into a file in the phone memory might resole this problem???

any ideas please??

Without rooting the phone I do not believe there is a way for you to put anything into the phones memory.

When you say it appears to be after using the music player do you mean that an SMS came through while listening to music or that you used the music player and then later an SMS came through with the default tone?

I have used the music player and all of my tones have remained as they should be, although I have not received any notifications through while using the music player.

Have you made a copy of the file you want to use as the tone?  So you end up with 2 copies, one with your music and one in  notifications?

i seem to get the same problem...
even when iv stoped useing the music player.. i get the default tone, then after so long it seems to work like i set it. also i get times when the sms reverts to default tone but the e-mail notification wich is set to the same mp3 file will play as set...
strange problem this one
