I thought I had 'Stocks' sorted (prior to 2.2 update) but it keeps running now, the 'update scedule' is greyed out and set at every hour. Advanced Task Killer for Froyo thinks it's killing it but it seems to start again even if I delete it's data.

So, can you delete any of the apps which come with the phone and if not how do you permanently stop some of then running?

Thanks

Stewart

Stewart,

With regards to ATK, read this.  We strongly suggest removing it.

Deleting default apps is not an option ... unless you root the phone.

Regarding the "Stocks" app, follow this procedure :
Settings -> Accounts & sync -> Stocks -> make sure "Sync stock info" is de-selected.
if it is de-selected already, ATK is to blame for its constant booting.  The phone will learn to deal with it shortly after you remove ATK.

Just to add to XSaenen's post , if you are opening the Stocks App to see if it indeed dead,  and you have not unchecked the Update when opened box ( within the Apps settings menu) it will obviously do it's thing.

OK ATK has gone, (thanks for that) but when I follow the above, and get to the sync stock info, it says "select to sync all"  Update scedule is greyed out so there is no way to change it? Where do I go in settings that will let me change it?

In manage accounts it's there but won't let me change it - only adds not deletes? (AS an aside, when I click add News is there but without a tick and it won't let me select it?

I'm useless at this, my first smartphone  Embarrassed Maybe I should have stuck with my Sony 905!

There's no need to add or delete anything.  Let me write the procedure again, abeit a bit more in detail

1 ) Open "Settings"
You'll get the menu with all the settings.  Sound, Display, accounts & sync, Location etc etc.

2 ) select "Accounts & sync"
At this point you'll get options for "Background data", "auto-sync" and a list of everything the phone is syncing with.  Facebook, gmail, news, stocks etc.

3 ) select "Stocks"
now you'll see 2 options.  "Account settings" and "Sync stock info".

Next to "Sync stock info", there's a checkbox.
If there's no green "V" symbol there, the app won't synchronize.
However if there is one there, it will.  In that case you'll need to touch the box to grey it out.

There is no need to delete the Stocks' account or anything.  Unticking the box is enough, as that will stop it from polling the server and eventually from booting alltogether.
So after you've made sure that the "Sync stock info" option is disabled (read as : if the box is all grey), you can just exit the menu by pressing the home button.

-----

With regards to the C905 ... second-best phone I ever had.  I also came from a C905 with the Desire being my first true smartphone.

No removing the stocks app without root access, or possibly using adb

Thanks for your patience, and more detail, but... there is no checkbox at 'sync stock' info and there is no green V symbol, BUT there isn't at the ones that I want to sync (and currently do) - has the layout changed with 2.2? It just says 'sync stock info' and yesterdays date, the others have an option to set a number of hours for each sync but no tick or V.
Background data is ticked, should it be?
Auto sync isn't, should it be?
Accounts 'showing' are: Facebook for HTC Sense, Flickr, google, Stocks, Twitter & Weather. I tried to add News but failed... Embarrassed Under add account news isn't ticked and when I press it nothing happens!

Thanks for the help so far though...

Good to know my phone history matches an expert though  Grin

I have no tick - grey or otherwise Huh

Underneath 'Sync stock info' it says select to sync all 8/10/2010 22:36 but there is no tick!

Plus as I said, when I go into: settings:accounts & sync: none of the list shows a tick when you open them??

If I click 'add an account' then they have ticks against Facebook, Flickr, google & twitter but not news and I can't make one switch on for news either... but Stocks isn't in that list at all?

Huh?  Shocked

Looks  like something is seriously messed up there.  Personally I'd suggest a factory reset, but maybe Sakai has a better idea.  He's more familiar with the "clearing cache and/or data" kind of solutions than I am.
