i have just got my 32 gb sd card for my desire. what my ? is how do i back up my paid for apps. and be able to restore them back once i root my mobile. i was hoping to not lose them once i put my 32 gig card in. can anyone help. one the right way. i know how to root the mobile. but i need to know on how to back up the paid apps so i dont need to buy them again

If you got the paid apps from the market, you can always download them again.

As for the SD card, in Android 2.1 apps are stored on the phone's memory, not the SD card.  So they should all still b there if you change the card.

Whatever apps you downloaded are linked to your market account.  That way you can simply download them again.

If you're so worried, perhaps you should refrain from rooting it alltogether untill you've learned how it all works.
