Hi.I got an LG Cookie Plus recently, and I'm going to have to return it, because it automatically locks the screen when I try to dial a number to retrieve my voicemail. Then I have to keep fighting with the phone to unlock it, because it keeps locking the screen every second or two, as I am trying to go through the process of playing my voicemail.I do not want to have to keep making gestures or pressing buttons every two seconds while I'm trying to retrieve my voicemail. I'm considering changing the LG for an HTC Desire, IF it is more flexible in its options. My question is, does the HTC Desire lock the screen very quickly like the LG, and if so, can you extend the amount of time before it automatically locks the screen? Or tell it not to lock the screen while dialing?

You can set it all up to your liking.  15 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute, all the way up to ... well ... never

Also, there's a pattern lock (where you need to connect dots in a specific pattern you chose), a pin-code lock and a password to choose from.  So plenty of options.

It won't lock the screen while dialling, but does have a proximity sensor which protects you from accidentally clicking something with your ear while you're holding the phone to your head.

WOW.  Shocked  This is a good phone.

Though I just took an hour to go through the 170 page (5.82mb) manual and did not see any of those options about unlocking the screen after an automatic screen lock. Only a reference to a finger gesture. And the stuff about the pattern lock option, but that was in reference to a manual protection screen lock, designed to prevent unauthorized use. Not the automatic screen lock that normally activates when you use the phone feature. (It looks like I'm going to return my Cooke + for the HTC, so I'm hoping there's a better manual somewhere, that explains all of the phone's features...)

ohh, I forgot something.  What I said in my previous post is indeed the phone lock.  The security-related one.

There's also a secondary lock for the display, which is basically a slider you need to drag down.  This is also customizeable in time, with almost the same options.  15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 10 minutes and 30 minutes.

-----

So for example : you set the phone lock for 10 minutes and the screen lock to 2 minutes.

2 minutes after you stop using the phone, the screen goes out.  To reactivate the phone you only need to touch the power button, at which point it will show the slider.  Slide it down and voila, you can do whatever you want.

If you don't use the phone for more than 10 minutes, it locks up completely.  First you push the power button, at which point it will show the slider.  Slide that down and it shows the keyboard, keypad or the dots you use for the pattern lock, depending on which security system you selected.  Only after entering the correct code/pattern, you'll be able to use the phone again.

Some people think it's annoying that you need to double-unlock the phone, but after a week or so it becomes second nature.  You don't even think about it anymore (which is why I forgot to mention the regular screen lock in the first place.  It's THAT natural really).

-----

On the code/pattern input screen, there's a button for calling emergency services, so if you're involved in an accident, anyone can still call an ambulance with your phone without requiring your code/pattern.

As for the manual, I assume that's the .pdf from HTC's site.  That's the same one we have, as the phone itself only comes with a quickstart guide really.  And the same .pdf you already read is on the memory card, so you can read it on the phone as well.  I'd suggest reading it on the PC tho, so you can use the phone to check things while reading.
IMO it covers most of the functions, but it's too much info at once, and in the wrong order.  If you get the phone, play with it and learn as you go along.

The HTC manual sucks, as with any smartphone manuals. Why do I say this?

Because too many people come up here asking questions. Waaaaaay too many people.

Basically, during a call, or a voicemail action, the phone disables the touchscreen and keeps it in wake mode. you won't need to fiddle around.

Screen-lock can also be engaged and off-ed via a click of the power button.

Thanks mucho for the good info and update. If it can do what you say re: display lock, I'll be very keen on getting an HTC Desire in place of the Cookie +.  Smiley

You have to kind of wonder about that, don't you. As a prospective customer of HTC's phones, I need (and have the right to!) know whether it can perform a certain function or not. But I can't ask the folks at Telus, the company I plan to buy it from, because from my LG Cookie + experiences with them, they are just about useless for getting detailed information on the phones they sell. So I go on the net to download the manual.... But guess what, the basic information on display lock that XSaenen mentioned is not in the official manual. I guess 210 pages wasn't enough to fit it in. (n.b. "screen lock" refers to the phone protection lock in the manual. Just to make things more confusing for the noob). I certainly can't get this information on their site. So in effect, forums is my only recourse for being informed. And since this appears to be the only HTC Desire forum... that's why this many people are asking these questions!

That's the same thing with the LG Cookie Plus; the phone that's driving me nuts. The problem there is that while the screen lock can be re-enabled pressing a button or a touchscreen gesture, I had to keep doing this every 2 seconds, while I was trying to use the dialpad to get my voicemail. You could not vary this delay with the LG. So if you can with the HTC, it'll be worth the $50 extra to have this feature.

210 pages just about covers the basics.  A full rundown on every function would require an encyclopedia rather than a .pdf file.
