How can you check to reassure yourself that the phone is switched off (to avoid embarrassment when at the theatre for example)? As far as I can see you can't. In which case there is a major design fault.

There's several ways, but all of them are workarounds indeed.  A flashing LED or a secondary key to wake it up would have been a nice feature.

As for the workarounds : You could try to call it with another phone or mail it.  You could also plug the USB cable in (which, if the other end is connected to a PC, will wake the phone up if it's only asleep)

As for embarassment in theatres, it has a widget which quickly allows you to change the profile.  Available options are Normal, Silent and Vibrate. 
That should do the trick as well, so if the show is too boring you can still use the phone to browse the market or read an e-book or something.
