Hi, I had a lot of trouble with this.  First I guess you know that it connects as a LAN device as if it's a Local Area 10/100 connect for share internet as HTC NDIS enabled device, but as a USB drive for Sync and access the SD card. Also you have to install HTC Sync from the SD card first (see the manual).  By the way, the connections are only visible on the laptop when actually connected.
I'm a consultant and in 2007 my client installed access to their VPN on my Dell Laptop running XP.
This did not affect subsequent LAN connections and sharing internet on my Nokia as a mobile, but I found that some of the settings in the Lan Connection Properties from 2007 prevented connection with the Desire - found this by trying on a similar Dell.   Also it's possible that the Nokia connection setup may have caused problems but I deleted that before discovering LAN property problem.

Hope this helps

Thanks for Anorak60 useful information. I have tried to turn off Firewall from my Bit Defender Anti-virus and then the computer can connect internet.

But another problem is found. When I connect internet for few minutes, my HTC Desire turn off automatically and turn on again automatically. I don't know why there are so many problems for me.
