Is there an easy way to turn off the internet on my desire?
I am going on holiday soon and do not want extra data charges.
The Hotel I am staying at has WI FI and I would like to connect to this but not the local service provider other than for calls of course.
I have used the mobile network tab in settings/wireless and networks. But found that some programs installed on the phone still managed to check for updates, seemingly bypassing the fact that I had turned the mobile network off? I am a little miffed and would appreciate some advice please.

Your best option would be to disable data roaming.

Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> de-select "Data roaming"
