Is there any way to "emulate" those hardware buttons?

Maybe with a menu-bar on the screen, that contained buttons with the same functionality as the hardware-buttons.

Or maybe some kind of gesture emulating the hardware-buttons.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for posting this to the forum - I had the intention to kick off the very same discussion myself but you've managed to frame this far better than I would have been able to! Just to continue with this concept, I think it's a major area in the overall usability of the phone. I do feel that having to switch from touch screen to key tapping is a bit cumbersome at times and it would be so much better if the functionality performed by the hardware buttons was integrated witin the screen space. I was actually wondering whether they may even be an app on the market which meets this need?

Agree with it feeling a bit cumbersome. I am also worried I will damage the buttons in the long run. I after all use them constantly, especially the back-button.

I have tried some searches on both google and in various apps-libraries (or whatever it's called Smiley), but have not been able to find any applications dealing with this "problem", or even anyone talking about it.

I hope it's just because I search with the wrong words, and not because it's simply not possible ...

I think it can work... The whole screen is designed to be utilized, but if you would like such buttons on the touchscreen itself, screen real-estate will be reduced. All it would take is a keyboard-like app that'll pop-out all the time though...
