Hi all,

I have had my desire for a while now and realize I haven't been using the android software and it's link with gmail to it's full potential.

I have been saving all my contacts to the phone instead of to my gmail account.  I now want to have them linked to my gmail account but can't figure out how to do this other than re-typing each contact in as a gmail contact (which I don't want, nor have the time to do).

Is there an easy way to change a "stored in phone" contact to a gmail contact?

Thanks.

That's not going to work Spile, if the contacts are entered as Phone contacts they won't ever sync with the gmail account.

The only way to properly import them to a gmail account is via the PC.  For that the contacts need to be in CSV format, which can be done by importing them to a Windows Live Mail account and then exporting them to CSV.
The problem is getting them from your phone to your PC.  You'd need a way to back them up to the SD card (there are apps for that, but I don't know which ones)

Alternatively you could disable the phone's entire internet connection (very important that you turn it of, or you'll have to sort out a mess of duplicate entries) and manually enter every contact into your Gmail account on the PC while reading them from your phone.  If you don't have too many contacts, that shouldn't take too long.
Once you're done, delete all the contacts on the phone.
Only after that is done, you can turn on the internet connection again and let the phone sync with your Gmail account.  Then the contacts will appear on the phone as gmail contacts.

I went into people hit menu and import/ export.  Exported the phone contacts to the SD card.

Plugged the phone on to the computer, copied the exported file to the computer, then opened gmail and imported the file to my gmail account.

Then synched the contacts and everything was good.

I then deleted the phone contacts and ti deleted everything, all my contacts.  So I had to sync again to get them back.

But now I am unable to sync the contacts any more.  I can sync the phone and email but I can't sync the contacts, I keep getting an error message.

This is so frustrating.

Err ... hold on

Do you now have contacts on the phone or not?  With the procedure you mentioned (if it happened in that order), the sync would normally delete the contacts from your gmail account instead of syncing them to your phone.

I didn't delete anything, I had no gmail contacts in my phone, they were initially stores as my "phone " contacts.  The first time I synched after exporting my phone contacts to my gmail contacts it added the contacts to my phone as gmail contacts, so now I had duplicates stored in my phone and in the gmail account.

Anyway I was able to fix the synching issue.  I went into my phones settings and cleared the info in my contact's.  Which removed all contacts from the phone.  Then I was able to synch with gmail again adding all the contacts from gmail beck to my phone in the gmail account.

There must have been something in the contacts settings that didn't synch with gmail.  all is good.. for now Smiley

So much the better then.  Still it's weird that it won't sync anymore.  I think this is more of a gmail-related or android-related issue, so maybe someone at XDA or the Android forums will know more about it.
As much as I'd like to solve this without leaving this forum, I'm afraid my knowledge has bounds and this is well beyond those.  So I'd suggest asking it there.

I found the solution on the android forums.  I was going to post a link to the thread but wasn't sure about the rules of this forum allowing it.

This is the solution.

Quote
Go to menu>settings>applications>manage applications>contacts storage and then delete the data. I backed up my Google contacts on line first by exporting the file just in case. (Not a bad idea anyway, this way you'll have an Excel database with all your contact in case anything should ever happen to your phone).

Then resync. It will all go back in without a problem. I noticed that the file is about 1/2 the size now and I think that's because I didn't sync up all the Facebook data back yet (no photos matching to people, etc.). but I think I'll make sure it all syncs continuously again first, then try adding back in the Facebook info.

No worries about the rules.  We'd rather see people being happy with solutions that came from elsewhere than seeing them miserable because they can't find one here at all.
As long as the poster of the original message on the Android forums doesn't complain, I won't mind.  If he does complain however, I'll remove it immediately and see how we can put it back up without problems.

So either way it would land on my head, not yours.

Some forums are strict and ban the members for posting links, and then say "you should have read the rules" bla, bla, bla.

Anyway, here is the link to the android forum, I did what the OP said to do and it worked for me.

http://   androidforums.   com/htc-droid-eris/81579-fix-google-contacts-not-syncing.html

You have to remove the spaces as for some reason when I post the link the forum changed it to redirect here.  It must be in the forum settings settings somewhere.
