I've had a look through the Q&A's here but not found anything that helps. I got my Desire yesterday and have hardly put it down!

As usual (always the same problem with a new phone) am having problems getting the syncing to work for contacts. Used HTC Sync (did I do the right thing?) and it seems to have worked OK. Of course, as usual not all my info has been brought across from my Outlook'07 contacts, but that's to be expected.

What's not to be expected is that once the contacts are in, I can't seem to search by company/organisation, or by keyword within the company field or notes section.

So if I want to find someone to phone but I can't remember their name, I can't find them even if I remember the company name, or remember they "sell computer parts", none of the searches I have tried will find them.

Have set the search function to search for people, but this hasn't altered anything. Similarly, people search, or searching within contacts don't work either.

Please help! I am sure there must be an app or an easy way to do this...it would be incredibly crappy if it didn't!

Nice site by the way - already been really useful to me!

got the solution:
settings > search > searchable items: check people
(itt is not 100%, but works)

Thanks for the reply, but I had already tried that. A better solution is a product like Touchpad Dialer which has a brilliant search capability though it does crash every 5 mins at the moment...hope this will be sorted out.

As an aside, thank you for your reply. It has been almost two months since I posted my question and you are the only one who has been bothered to answer. Shame. I was kinda hoping this forum would be a useful one, but the http://htcdesireforum.com/ site seems more active and people seem friendlier and more willing to help out.

Bye.  Cry

Anyone any answers as to how to search through contacts notes field  stored on HTC for a particular word WITHOUT having to search rest of web etc etc.  A simple search for "plumber" cos I can't remember the guys name, and I know he is in the database,  and yet HTC can't do it? Surely not.  I have tried selecting contacts  only in the settings/search options,,   but it still seems unable simply to search for any occurrance of "plumber" in notes field.  Is there a better app on market?

Help please

Hi Everyone,

I have had a HTC Desire Z for over 6 months and have been battling with this issue of how do you search for text within Contact fields other than a person's name. I'm almost incredulous that this is even an issue given it's an Android phone using an operating system made by (supposedly) the masters of "search"! Has anyone found a genuine answer to this issue? I've seen people suggesting saving all contacts from the same company in groups and people suggesting using a dialer (and all other manner of, what are effectively just work-arounds that don't really address the issue) but no one seems to have nailed how...HOW do you search for words or text strings within Contacts. Surely....(no wait let me just yell that....SURELY!) this is a basic function that shoud be just there without so much effort required. I've been able to search all my contacts for data in any field (including notes) for more than a decade, why (OH WHY PLEASE TELL ME HTC/Google!) can't I find an easy way to do this?

If anyone can enlighten me on whether there's a real way around this seeming unfathomable limitation I'd be very appreciative.

regards

The free app Contacts Plus gives you the ability to search/display contacts.
