While my phone connects and works fine without any problems to my Nokia car kit, how do I get it to play music from my phone via bluetooth?

My old Nokia N73 did it!!

it can be done as my car stereo is bluetooth capable and i play music, control the phone and take calls all through the head unit.

didn't do anything special just paired the devices which shows up as BT CAR STEREO and works like a bluetooth headset

Go to:

Menu->Settings->Wireless & networks->Bluetooth settings

Make sure that bluetooth is ON

Long press on the name of the device (your car stereo) and a menu will pop up. Choose Options.

Make sure that under profiles that both Phone and Media are checked.

If you don;t see both options  unpair the device and try again.

Tried that ....... but only have the phone audio option, not media. Tried un- pairing and re connecting

Its not a car stereo, its a hands-free car kit (Nokia CK7W), but as I said in the original post, the Nokia N73 just worked once I paired it, perhaps because it was a Nokia kit??

Sounds like your old phone and the bluetooth set were using an un-official Nokia only work-around to get your music to the headset.

Usually bluetooth devices that work with media use a2dp and you'll see two profiles in the phone.

The Desire (or other non-nokia phones) probably won't work or all features won;t be supported. See this Nokia support thread.

You will need to get a bluetooth device that supports a2dp to play media over bluetooth.

Thanks for that, looks like I will have to get a A2DP bluetooth speaker, or I might just wait 6 months as I'm due a new company car and it will have hopefully a built in bluetooth kit (hopefully A2DP)
