Hi, I have finally figured out how to connect to 3G instead of just WI-FI (which took help from the HTC help centre!) and I now want to make sure that no automatic updates to apps happens when I am in 3G mode. I want to update manually when in WI-FI only. Can someone please let me know what settings to use? thanks

Run the Market app.
Press "menu" and select "My Apps".
Then for each app you have installed, touch that app, then untick the "Allow automatic updating" box.
