Hi everyone!
Sitting at home . WiFi in full operation and showing as such on the Desire. If I use my Desire what will it prioritise: My home WiFi connection or the ISP's data connection?

Both have strong signals everywhere in the house and both are equally fast. Important to know as don't want any isp billing surprises!

Thanks in advance for your input

Hi,

By ISP do you mean your mobile data provider and not your ISP that provides your internet connection via WiFi?
When I turned on my WiFi the phone automatically uses that over the mobile data connection so there should be not need to worry about going over your data allowance, also try using a 3G monitor to track what you have used.

The phone will default to using Wifi whenever it is range of your wifi signal and only reverts to using your Data when out of wifi range.

Indeed. I had both WiFi and Mobile on when I downloaded Froyo, and checked my remaining data afterwards.  The phone only used WiFi.

Hi there.

I am having a disagreement with o2 at the moment on this topic.

They say that if I use the WIFI over my Desire (which I am yet to buy) at home that it will still use my 3g data allowance.  I am trying to tell them how can this be if I switch off 3g and set to use WIFI only?

This is what they have told me.....

I'm pleased to tell you, that you'll be able to connect to the Wi-Fi at home. However, the free web allowances on your account will be utilised while connecting to the Wi-Fi at home.

Once you've utilised the web allowances on your account you'll be charged at 3 per MB on your account for this service. You can check your free allowance balance by either calling 4444 free or by sending a text with the word "balance" to 20202 free.

Can anyone comment on this - I am sure I am correct and they are wrong!!!!!

Cheers

If you can check your remaining 3G balance easily, you could try to download some stuff and checking your balance a few hours later.  Sure, if they are right it'll cost a few MB worth of data, but it'll put your mind at ease or save you some nasty surprises later on.

However I'm pretty sure the Desire automatically chooses WiFi over 3G.  As I said earlier, I downloaded the 90mb system update with both on, and didn't use any of my data allowance (I pay 10 for 500MB on a prepaid card, and can check my remaining data volume by means of free text messages).

Also, the Desire will only show the Data or the WiFi icon in the notifications bar, but never shows both at the same time.  If both are on and it is in range of my router, it'll only show the WiFi, indicating that that's what it uses.  Also, when I switch off the WiFi it takes a while for the data icon to appear, which leads me to believe that it needs to boot the data connection again.

But you can of course make sure by turning off the data when you turn on the WiFi.  That's a sure way.

What they are saying does not make sense at all.  I would try asking someone else at O2 or try their support forum, if there is one.

It would make no sense at all if you used your mobile data allowance while using a Wifi connection.  I am on T-Mobile and the Desire uses Wifi over a 3G connection if there is one available and my 3G usage does not get used.

There must be someone at O2 that can clear this up, have you tried going into one of their stores?  Maybe you will get more help that way.

I have had 3 emails now from 3 different Customer Services people at o2 - all saying the same thing.....it is just unbelievable that they can be giving out such misleading information.

Hopefully someone at o2 will know what they are talking about  Huh and get this confirmed for me.

I have posted the item on the 02 forum and replies I have had from there are of the same opinion as here....everyone but o2 seems to know the "correct" answer Wink!!!!

Hi there.  If you're worried about exceeding your data plan, just keep mobile network connection off. My desire has separate switches for wifi and mobile network.   I can turn on or off either one whenever I want.  I usually have both off to conserve battery.

Is it possible to limit specific apps from using my 3G connection ?

In other words - when I turn the APN on, many apps (running in the background) tend to "jump in" and consume data...)

I want specific apps to connect through 3G and others to stay offline. How can I do that?

Thanks

I'm not aware of any such option, edo.  As far as I know they're all always on the same settings.  So either turn the data off, or live with the apps trying to get their info.
It's not like they use huge amounts of traffic, but if you're close to your data plan's limit, I can understand the problem.

Thanx.

As an alternative - is it possible to track data usage by application (=how much data each app consumes, similar to the battery usage report) ?

No such option either.  But if you can get a "remaining data" report from your operator, you could try to get that, then leave the Desire alone for about 6 hours and get another report.  Then it's a quick calculation to work out how much it uses in a day, or a month.  If it's just checking the mails, weather etc, it probably won't be too much.

One thing you can do, is set the time between the polls.  For instance by default the mail will poll it's server every 15 minutes during peak hours, and every hour off-peak.  If you let it poll every 2 hours all the time, you'l end up using less data.  The weather app can also be set to poll less (it polls every 3 hours by default), but not too sure about Friendstream and such.

Having the same problem with Orange used 95% of my phone over what I thought was my Wireless network in Bulgaria, and returned home to find a 537.00 bill for data....I expected about a 50.00 bill for times whne I was out of a wi fi area but they have said I was using data everyday!!! this was impossible as at least three days I was on wi fi only... but aparently the data connection is running all the time even when on wi fi...
