All was well last night, didn't notice it until this afternoon. The HTC Desire isn't seeing any of the WiFi signals around me. I was using WiFi to connect. SEttings on the phone show everything is on. Could I have downloaded something that would keep it from working?

I had been tearing my hair out because my new HTC Desire couldn't see my home WiFi yet occasionally would "see" a weak signal from a neighbor's house.

One was running WPA-SPK so I also set up another standalone WAP running WEP.

Long story short, it wasn't the type of security, it was because I was using Channel 13

It suddenly occured to me that not all countries (I'm in Australia) don't have Channel 13.
Changed to Channel 6 and everything worked.

I have no problem seeing my Wi-Fi but as it requires a long password is there any way of copying and pasting the password in to access Wi-Fi?

Not sure what your problem is. It can be a bit fiddly typing in the WiFi key on the touch keyboad (Tip: Use the trackball to move between fields - it's easier) but if it's longer than the available space it will just scroll sideays as you keep typing. Once you then make the connection it will remember it so you won't have to type it in each time and it will connect automatically once you walk into it's range. You can't copy and past passwords even on a PC as the display of dots or asterisks is not the actual character however I guess you mean the phone doesn't seem to have a copy and paste function. I haven't found one either.

I used a password generator to generate a random passowrd and it contains over 60 random characters so I store it in a text file and when needed I can cut and paste the file into the password field. Lazy I guess but at least its accurate and quicker. Apart from that I use the cut and paste facility all the time and I know it is available on Apple iPhone so I am somewhat surprised it isn't available on this phone or so it seems.

Copy & Paste is there but haven't tried pasting to a form field (like password from a text file).
However check these YouTube videos. Let us know if you can copy from a text file you kepp on the device, into the password field using this method.

This video http://bit.ly/cb9fzq mentions cut and paste very near the end. Next video is better.
This video http://bit.ly/8YkCzw from about 20% from start to halfway this one shows copy text to clipboard and paste. Not sure if a password field when pressed and held would come up with the paste option. Let's know. Smiley

Interesting videos but as you guessed does not apply to a text file. Clearly copy and paste is available from web pages so it must be only a small step

Im currently using Belkin N 150 as my router. Been trying hard to set and reset the setting for the router so that my HTC Desire can get connected to the router. Till now Im still unable to get connected to the router from my HTC Desire.

However, in the shopping complexes or restaurants whichever happen to have the wifi, my HTC Desire can get connected.

Issit something wrong with the setting or could it be Belkin?

Can your Desire "see" your wireless network?  I'm sure you'll get your Belkin to work with the right settings.

I connect the Desire automatically and seamlessly now to either of two routers and a couple of access points on my WiFi network as I move about.

Make sure you haven't set your WiFi to CH 13 'cos the phone won't see that at all. I don't know if you are running straight Wireless N but I'm using a mix of 802.11 B/G/N mixed WiFi on the DLink Router (DSL-2730B) gateway at home and Wireless-G on a Billion BiPAC (7401VGPR3) gateway router at the other end. (The other couple of APs are running G)

In other words I don't know if my Desire is actually using or able to use Wireless N at all - maybe just G which is fast enough.

Just as an aside, my LAN is spread over two buildings about 800metres apart with a wireless bridge joining them but I'm running a router gateway at each end as the wireless bridge can be a bit slow sometimes. However I digress.

The whole LAN Workgroup name and WiFi SSIDs are the same throughout. I'm using a security settings of "Auto(WPA and WPA2)" on the DLink and "WPA-PSK" on the Billion. Your wireless key is case sensitive so ensure you enter it the same as on the Access point(s).

Now as I move about and between buildings the phone auto connects AND doesn't then use Telstra when away from my WiFi unless i say so.

(As an aside, with two routers on the same network instead of getting really fancy with subnets I split the IP address range for each router and hard coded all IP addresses and gateway on the peripherals so each device would use the right router) The phone however just uses DHCP.

It also works well on other WiFis such as at Maccas.  Wink

NEWSFLASH for StreyDoggie:

Just checked. The HTC Desire only works on IEEE 802.11 b/g so it won't connect to your Belkin router if you are running straight Wireless N (and don't use CH13 either)

Try setting it to channel 6, wireless b/g, change your wep encryption to WPA. Just a suggestion, works for me though.

*BUMP*

Ok, first time here, thought I'd pop this here as its the same issue... I think

I have a Belkin_N1_A180E6 running b+g+n as this is the only option (other than off).  My Desire can see the network at all times.  I have checked and it's running channel 6

I'm having intermittent connection, it does all of the following:

Connects automatically
fails to connect, no "connecting" message, no "disconnected" message either
fails to connect, says "connecting" then goes to "disconnected"
Tells me my password is wrong (I know its right, I can see that)

It also seems to "throw" either the ipad or one of the other PC's off the network by causing an IP conflict, the PC's may have been caused by my Xbox but the ipad was 100% the Desire

I have tried the following:
Check the router - no MAC filtering or any kind of service denial set up, passwords match
Reboot the Desire - It can't seem to shut itself down so I have to get trigger happy with the battery.
Used the Airplane on/off
Forgotten the network and re-aquired/configured
Turned the WiFi off/on
Reset the router (pulled and reconnected the power)

Occasionally, after time, like when I get fed up of trying, it connects on its own :s

The question is this, am I simply "screwed" in terms of having the wrong router? (i.e I can't disable the n)

Oh, and I have connected to another router without any problems...

Drackie,

Since you can't turn off Wireless N on your router, your cheapest option might be to get hold of a cheap Wireless Access Point (which does run G) and set it up with a different SID so you can tell which one you are trying to connect to. If yout router is using Channel 6 running wireless N and since wireless N actually uses 4 adjacent channels to operate, I would set the WAP to say Ch 1 or 2. Someone might have an old WAP laying around.

Having set the WAP to a permanent IP address that suits, I would probably turn off DHCP on the WAP so that it gets your router to manage the WAP client IP addresses.

I found a rather old DLink 2100AP laying around which did the trick and used it (until I found that I could drop N on my router and run G instead).

Another advantage of running an alternate WAP would be that wireless N is still available for file transfer between your other devices via the router switch. Note that G speed is more than adequate for fast internet access.

I can use wifi in cafe's but not at home. I'm using a netgear router with b/g option. I was able to connect when I set the network to open but cant connect with either wep or wpa. The network is visible and the phone says connected but cant open any web pages. I set the router to channel 6. I'm living in Vietnam by the way, and set the router to g because I read on another forum not to have mixed mode b/g. My HTC Touch HD can connect on every setting.
