Hey, I got the desire when they 1st came out but just couple of days ago I got a newer one.

Just wondered if anyone could explain a few differences.

I have 2 blue lights on the top left of the phone, what are they for?

Why even tho I'm using advanced task killer do programs like the voice thing and footprints continue to run?

Also on the writing bad can I get it back to the original desire lay out so the exclamation and question marks are on screen instead of having to go through menu's to get them up .

Also on the keypad these isn't a 1 click button to just minimise it unless you hold it on its side..

These Are all iv noticed over the last few days, is there any other differences?

Thank-you :-)

What model is this exactly?
A Desire, Desire S, or some other variant?
The Desire has a proximity sensor in the top left corner, no lights.
It is generally a BAD idea to run ATK. See here: http://www.htcdesireforum.com/htc-desire-general-discussion/app-killers-don't-help-with-battery-power/
It sounds like your new phone has a later version of Android than your old one, with a new keyboard. There's a very nice keyboard available on the app market, called "Keyboard from Android 2.3"

That is the proximity sensor.
It wasn't visible before, maybe they've changed to a slightly different sensor.
It's just for the phone to detect when you are holding it up to your ear.

That's the proximity sensor indeed.  For the record, those lights don't come on because they're not really LEDs.  They may be more visible sometimes due to the angle at which light hits them.

Oh really, well thank you both for your answers ..  Smiley

And Ric, I read up on everyone's views on ATK. Might give it ago as a lot of people seem to believe it doesn't help, but having used it for the length of time I have I'm quite skeptical .. but its just a case of getting used to not using it I guess a.

If you have read the topic that Ric pointed you to, you already know my opinion and views on ATK.  So I will not go any further into those.

However I will point out again that it can take up to two weeks for the phone to adjust.  Especially during the first few days it might be a good idea to keep your charger with you at all times.  At first the phone doesn't know which apps to kill, so they'll run amok for a while.

Generally speaking, people seem to have a 5-10% extra battery life without ATK, but there have been a few cases where battery life got worse indeed.  However it turned out that this was caused by badly coded apps.  Removing those sorted the problem.
So if you notice that it hasn't improved after 2 weeks, we'll need to look into it.

FYI, I've personally seen much bigger differences.  My first Desire managed close to 100 hours of pure standby with ATK and 230+ hours without it.  Both tests were conducted in the exact same conditions with the exact same setup.

Haha yeah iv read what you think and your very against it.
Just to clarify though, iv now taken atk of but I noticed app's I hadn't been using where coming up such games, and social network sites such as peep and Facebook. In a couple days / weeks will the OS realise which app's I do and do not use and eventually stop turning them on?
Also I'm able to go into the manage app's option it gives me the option to force close an app which I imagine may work in a similar way to atk. Would you advice against using this option?
Thanks

I'd let Android sort it all out.  If you start forcing apps to quit, the OS will not learn that they keep using resources and that they need to be killed.

That being said, if you really never use facebook or twitter, you might want to stop those from syncing.  That should also stop them from booting themselves every time.

Settings -> Accounts & sync -> scroll to the ones you don't use and select them -> de-select all sync-related options.
