Hey guys,

I bought an HTC desire and with no carrier, factory conditions...but I am surprised to see that being the only user of this phone, and being not tied to any carrier, I am not a root user. Of course what annoys me is the limitations forced upon non-root users.
Ok I can root the phone, but I bought this at a very high price and I don't want to risk voiding my warranty.
This is annoying. Today I was trying to rectify the shortcoming of particular language support (arabic in this case) and I couldn't because I'm not root! I even cannot inspect what's on my phone's internal memory. I just want to inspect...not modify. This is a bit too much.

I don't know who's to blame...Google or HTC for these sort of limitations forced upon Unlocked phones.

Both are partly to blame. We tend to get over-hyped with Google's openness, but we forget that price for being open to whatever that can be done to it is, whatever can be done to it, will be done to it.

What I'm saying is that you are free to root, and therefore free to reap the benefits and rewards of rooting. For me, it took me two weeks to decide to root. The rewards outweigh the risk by a factor that can only be divided by zero.

And oh, you can unroot.

I also feel the need to explain why root access is not given to any user, even the owner. As Android evolved from the Linux mind-share, security features are built in. Root users (or Admin, if you are more familiar with Windows), have access to a sensitive section of the software called the /system partition. This is where the critical stuff is kept, and no user should have unfettered access to it, no matter how proficient they are with the system. The same applies to Android. Remember the amount of exploits that was in Windows 95 all the way to Windows XP? Those exploits were possible because you can install things as an Admin by default.

Thank you for you answer,

Well week one is over, and I haven't rooted yet. I guess I have to wait till week two Smiley. It is a tricky decision whether to root or not. All the posts I read previously said that you lose your warranty when you do so. I didn't root yet, so I didn't know that you can reverse rooting.
I have a basic knowledge in Linux, since my laptop is dual boot with Windows Vista and Ubuntu 10. However, in Ubuntu (and Linux in general, I believe), root access is somewhat protected by a password. That is why, whenever I want to install a package, I am asked for a password. My choice of Android as a mobile OS was due to my previous Ubuntu experience, which was not always very easy but in general was a positive one.

I would like to know more about reverse rooting, if you would point out some links and stuff, and how this may affect your warranty.

Best regards.

Sorry,

I came across your rooting guides after I've sent the message. I must say it's comprehensive, but it seems a bit difficult. Will give it a thought before taking that plunge.

Regards.

Agree on the comprehensive, disagree on the difficult. Otherwise, I can't do it Tongue The core principle of the guide is that everything is done in a highly safe process to reduce the chances of anything going wrong. So, happy rooting!
