I do love my phone and think it is one of the best Android phone out there if not the best. But cant stand why HTC would design there phone with so little internal memory?? It drives me nuts that I have to always delete an app do I can make room for another one.. And tell you the truth I dont have a lot of apps because of this. I really dont want to buy a good game because I am so worried about my memory. I cant wait for 2.2 to come to Telus but even with that said why would they do this on there top end phone?

Likewise, I have Android 2.2 and moved everything that will go to my 4GB SD card, but my available internal memory is 11% and I still have about 3.4 GB left on the SD card.
According to AppBrain I have 31MB of apps.
Can anyone itemise where all the rest of the 512 Mb has gone? I accept that the Froyo OS was about 90 Mb.

I am not sure about this but believe that contacts will use internal memory as will any emails, at least from Gmail.  I noticed that my memory is slowly going down as my emails increase, looks like I will be having a clear out of mail soon and see if that helps.

Also installing an app and uninstalling it does not appear to claim all of the memory back, only a hard reset seems to be able to do that, certainly helped me.  I reset and then installed the apps again and I have a lot more memory.

It's 90mb compressed, dear. Compression ratios for installation files are much bigger than your standard .zip files.

Your contact info are also stored in the ROM, as well as other uncompressed system files. Use "Android System Information" or "Quick System Information" to see how the system files take up space in your phone. Itemizing the whole list... is kinda pointless, seeing that you can't do anything about it...

But, please do a search for A2SD+ <- your gateway to freedom

Understood - I even realised that I only had 147 Mb to play with when I received the phone, which must have been for a reason!! (Future models?) Is there a possibility that future updates to this phone may enable us to store mail and contacts on the SD card?
On a related matter, before I understood the system, I had my primary gmail account as the main Mail account then added the same account plus two others to my Gmail app. I wanted to remove it to avoid duplication, but it threatens the 'factory reset' is the way to do it!  Any other way of deleting either a Gmail or would it be possible to delete the main 'Mail' Account without getting too complicated?

Future models have a much bigger internal memory, 1.5GB for both.

That said, a Class-6 SD card will provide similar benefits (speed and size), via Apps2SD+. I have been told that going above 1.5GB in your SD-based apps2sd is not advisable, so I am conjecturing that you can only have about 2GB of internal memory for the Android system. Judging from how it handles itself, I say 2GB of internal memory is fine. Note that internal memory has nothing to do with device storage. You can have a 32GB microSD monster hiding in there Tongue

As for deleting e-mail accounts, easy. "Settings", "Account & sync", select the account you wanna delete, "Remove account" button on the lower right.

Yes I saw that the Desire HD out in UK on October 11th has 1.5GB Internal, which would be a great improvement. If only that was a user hardware upgrade for those that jumped in on the original desire!
Not sure I understood the references to "going above 1.5 GB in your SD-based apps2SD"  and  "2GB of memory for the Android system" in reference to apps2SD. I haven't found any app more than 10 to 20 Mb on the SD card
I have used 'apptoSD' a Dolphin Browser add-on, which seems fine.
I tried to remove one of my Gmail accounts and got the message 'This account is required by some applications. You can only remove it by resetting the phone to factory defaults (which deletes all your personal data). You do that in Settings, under Privacy.

Well that is a step too far for me right now having spent a month getting this phone loaded and setup to my satisfaction!

I explained Apps2SD here.

To fix your gmail account, try re-running "Setup" maybe that'll help. Or it could be due to you running it twice. If that's the case, three times the charm. You've got nothing to lose anyway

Another thing to consider, especially for those new to android/smart-phone's (myself included Smiley ) is that you can claw back some internal memory by doing some cleaning once in awhile.

Memory hungry Apps such as HTC Mail, Gmail, Maps and YouTube among other's will possibly give much memory back if you remember to clear the Cache and in some cases Data from said App.

Adding deletion of Browser and Call history to your cleaning regime can only help and will possibly give a small performance boost too.

Well there's nothing that I can't stand about my Desire.
The main thing that annoys me is why I am not allowed to use it in some ways I want to, i.e. not root.
Imagine you buy a laptop and you're not allowed to use it the way you want, uninstall the crapware that comes loaded with it...to extend its usability.
I know that Desire gives a lot of space for customization BUT it stops at certain places. At least those who buy their phone unlocked should be root users...Anyway, I guess it's no point to nag about this, as there's no other way but to root and lose your warranty which I will not do.

I think the two things that I don't like about the Desire is:

1. The optical tracker sensor. I never use it unless I have too, and I think it's awful. I guess if you use it enough, you'll get use to it. I have to admit, I never like trackpads on laptops/notebooks either, but I wish HTC had used something like the analogue joystick like on the PSP, since the only time I really have to use the optical tracker is with certain games (ie. Radiant) and it's impossible to control. Most of the time I use it accidentally.

2. The other thing that's annoying is the volume controls. It's just too easy to turn the volume up/down accidentally. I wish HTC added a volume lock button/switch.

Gosh, who told you that? You can totally reverse rooting.

1. I use it to manually select text. The touchscreen is finicky when trying to edit "retards" and change it to "regards". Try it.

2. Yes, those buttons are REALLY annoying especially for gamers like ourselves Cheesy

Grin I think for me, it would be easier just to delete "retards" and type "regards" than it is to move the cursor to delete and replace the t with g using the sensor Smiley Actually... while trying to type "regards" a few times on HTC Notes using SlideIt keyboard, I can never accidentally type "retards" - lol
