It seems to be problematic to access the main screen when in a call, the screen goes black pretty quick. i assume it does this to prevent my ear from being my finger and accidentaly accessing stuff when in a call, but it should be able to accept the fact that i want to e.g check my calendar whilst speaking to someone... Anyone else have this problem? Or, even better, a solution to this problem?

Just press back or home buttons. The others may work too, but not tested.

I have this problem i have had the phone changed 4 times and it is the same on all 4 phones, when in call i cant get the screen back on to end call, also when i make a call and it goes to arnswerphone screen goes off, i cant end call. I called someone the other day who also has a htc, and we both had trouble hanging up, it took a couple of minutes for one of us to get the screen up to end call. also have trouble macking a call while on hold or sending a text while incall as cant get screen on or it momentaraly flashes on then off, is their a answer to this problem as it is quite frustraring. I tried pushing all the buttons on the phone to no efect so this is not the arnswer.

Hi guys,

I was just Googling for this exact same issue. It seems there are a few people with this problem, but I know a bunch of people that have Desire's without it.

I just did some testing and found that while in my leather case, I couldn't get the screen to turn on while in a call. But I could every time without it in the case. Which is a pain, I don't want to carry my phone without a case.

I believe this to be a sensor-related issue (or non-issue really).  The Desire has a sensor somewhere near the speaker or in the screen which detects proximity.  When I'm calling with the phone against my ear, the screen is off. However if I put it more than 2 iches (5 cm) from my ear, it suddenly lights up again.  Put it closer again, and I an clearly see it turn off again.  I assume this is done to save the battery.

I think your case is making the phone think it should keep the screen off.  It's not a problem or a design flaw really, but merely a function people aren't aware of when they buy the phone.

Absolutely. I'm at a loss to explain it though. I'd really like to continue using the cover, but it seems this may not be possible. I might lodge a support ticket with HTC to see what they say.

on the front screen on the top left hand with the screen off you can see 2 blue dots, if you cover these the screen will go off uncover them and the screen will come on, well arnswer this one, on my leather case there is a cut out around these sensors, so why have i got this problem, and i mainly have the problem when using a bluetooth headset, and i have to use that! it seems that if the phone is down in call and the screen goes off it wont come back on no matter what you do, does this mean you cant use a headset, cant have a case, what else cant you have!

Do you have a screen protector on?  The one I got from HTC has a cut out for both the LED, not sure why and for the proximity sensor.  I have read elsewhere that people who have applied a screen protector without the proximity cut out are having problems.  Just a thought.
As for my experience I have had not problems with this, as soon as I put the phone close to my ear the screen goes blank, move it away and the screen activates again.

thanks lodion, your right it is the leather case causing the problem, i have cut off the top part of the case that goes around the top part of the front of the screen, even though there was a cut  out on the top left courner where the sensor is in the black area, the sensor was registering that ther was something in close proxsimerty, and stopping the screen from coming back on, the phone now works how it should and the problem has gone, and i can still use the case. Thanks for everones help.

I use a Crocfol Premium protector.  Nice fit, exact shape of the screen, no cutouts for anything really.  No problems with the proximity sensor at all.  It certainly pays off to spend just a tad more money on your protector.

I use a faux leather case bought on ebay that has a plastic frame which the phone clips into, there is then a flap that covers the front of the phone, this is also an option as there is no part of the case touching the area in question.

Just another option for people searching this problem

I have had a similar problem when I need to key extra digits (e.g. for voicemail systems) while in a call. The screen kept blanking when I moved my hand near to key the screen. I haven't noticed it happening after the 2.2 update. Maybe this has been improved.
