The video on my phone is spot on but the quality of the stills using camera mode are rubbish yet supposed to be a good camera.

AFAIK I have not adjusted anything.

Is this a problem with all phones or just mine.

According to the user manual, when taking a photo you must wait for the auto-focus to adjust before taking a photo. This only takes a couple of seconds and you can see the adjustments taking place on the screen. This makes all the difference between a blurry photo and a clear one.
Hope this helps.

Might be due to the awkward ergonomics.  The shutter button should be on the side of the phone.  Now when you push the button, you push the entire bottom end of the phone slightly forward.  This movement happens at the exact moment the phone will try to snap the picture.
If your pics just look blurred, that's most likely the cause.

Try snapping a few pics with the phone resting behind a solid object.  If the phone can't move, the pic should be sharp.
It takes some practice, but you can overcome this.  In the first weeks I couldn't get 10% of my pictures right.  Now I'm up to 80-85%.
