I mounted my Desire today to see if I could delete some files because the SD card is full.  I thought it a bit strange because I only keep a couple of albums of music and a hundred or so images.  I noticed that a folder called .Mail has nearly 900mb worth of files in it.  My questions are: Can I empty this folder?  What would happen if I did.  What kind of files are these?  There are THOUSANDS of them in this folder and they all have a numerical name.  I can't imagine I've received that many emails in the few months I've had the phone.

PS.  Apologies if this question has been posted already - I searched before I posted but didn't find it.

900MB is an awful lot.  Mind you, if you had some mails with pics or videos in your outlook and synced with that, it might be easy to achieve that kind of size.

As for wether or not you can delete it, that's a good question.  I'm afraid I don't really know the answer.  Make a folder on your PC and move the files there.  That way you'll always have a backup if it didn't work.

By all means let us know when you find out.

I took your advice and copied the folder to my desktop and then deleted the folder contents on my phone (but kept the folder).  I have since restarted the phone and checked the Mail, Gmail and Messages and they all seem to be fine.  I just don't understand what the 15,000 odd files were for and why my phone had them.  If anybody knows why they were there then I would appreciate finding out.

Well, go through the files on the folder and list them out by order of size?

 Shocked

Don't say that to him !   He'll probably search your mails for spicy content and post that on the internet !

 Grin

In all seriousness, if you don't notice any difference, the files probably weren't important.  Try shutting down the phone and rebooting it, then check the size of the folder on the SD card one last time.  That way we can make sure it's not just a backup of a huge inbox.

@XSaenen: LOL, nothing risqué in there.  Not even pictures of my (man)boobies.

Looks like there's no adverse effects with deleting the contents of that folder.  All that is in there now is the emails I have received since yesterday (one had pictures so I know it's from that email as they are in the folder).  I would have thought that HTC Sync would have an option to empty that folder when you sync your phone but seeing as they can't even be bothered to have a Bluetooth Sync option I'm not sure we'll see that happen.
So I've restarted & synced twice since yesterday and all is good.  I imagine that the phone just re-downloads the information it needs from the email account.  I keep my inboxes pretty empty on the phone so I don't expect it to fill up again straight away.  Looks like we have a problem solved and if you find your SD card full then  I'd suggest checking that folder first (but copy the folder to your computer if you are iffy about deleting those files forever).

No, I really don't have the time to go through you inbox on your behalf... I'm merely suggesting a statistically expedient way of sorting through big files. And no, I would not like to see your man-boobs. I get sufficient risque mails on a daily basis to delete them immediately.
