Hi guys! i'm still having problems trying to connect my phone to my pc. I already checked the settings > connect to pc > default connection type > htc sync/disk drive. Tried both sync/disk drive but still won't work. After plugging in the usb, i could see under my computer > removable disk drive. After clicking removable disk drive, it says "please insert a disk into a removable disk". I've got a 4gb micro sd in my phone btw. Please help..Thanks!  Huh

Well, I haven't seen this problem before so I can only advise you on a couple of basic steps that I would take.

1. Switch off your phone.
2. Remove battery, SIM, and memory card and leave phone like that for at least 30 seconds.
2.1 If you have an SD card adapter or a USB Micro SD card reader, try putting your Micro SD into that and connect it directly to the computer to see what happens. If you still can't access it then it must be a problem with the memory card.
2.2 If you have connected the memory card directly to the computer try to see what the file format is. It should be FAT32 with a 32Kb alocation unit. This file system offers the best space / performance ratio for large memory card of 2GB or more.
3. Now, put your memory card, SIM and battery back in and switch it on again and wait for about 5 minutes to be 100% sure that all startup applications are up and running.
4. Go to the Setting > Connect to PC and mare sure the 'Ask me' option is selected.
5. Now, while making the sure the screen is NOT in standby (i.e. screen is not off and not locked), connect the phone to the computer.
6. The phone should ask you on-screen what type of connection you want.
7. Select 'Disk Drive' and click on done (or whatever the OK button is, I don't know it by heart).

Now, if you still can't access the memory card from you computer then you may have a problem. The next thing I would do is make sure that the USB port on the computer is not damaged or something. So, just to make sure, try connecting it to a different USB port. You should also try to connect it to a different computer and see if that works. Because if it does, it means that there may be a problem with your computer.

Umm... don't know mate. You definitely shouldn't need to restart you phone every time but I haven't got any other ideas for now.

I have much the same problem.

The support team advised that when installing HTC_sync on the PC you MUST disconnect from the internet. Apparently Windows 7 wanders on the internet to find drivers and pulls down and instals the wrong one !

The other thing is the USB port. The ports at the front of my PC don't work for this phone - I get 'unrecognised USB device'. But the ports at the back DO work. Don't ask . .

Rather than fiddle about at the back of the desktop unit every time, I simply connected to my laptop which runs Ubuntu Linux. Worked first time

It shouldn't be a faulty cable or the wrong cable, since restarting helps me to mount my phone as a disk drive. Tried all the usb ports but without luck. I'm using vista btw, already emailed htc support on this one. Am hoping to hear from them soon. HTC sync works flawlessly for me, problem is just the disk drive  Lips sealed

Just thought id post here for the benefit of anyone googling this problem as I did. I had the same problem - phone would only charge, wouldn't prompt for connection type or anything.

The problem for me was that I was using the usb cable from the car charger, not the mains charger! used the one from the mains charger instead and it worked fine. It seems like a ridiculous situation to me - it must cost them more money to create a separate cable, nevermind the support costs for people experiencing this problem.

I am truly baffled... I had this exact problem of using the car charger cable. The phone would only charge, nothing else, not ask me how to connect, not show USB icon in top corner, just charge. Switching cable to the one supplied with the mains charger everything works as expected. And I spent so much time finding this out...

Truly amazed... how can this be? A cable is a cable, metallic wires carrying current from source to sink, nothing else...

Sane problem here - except i don't have a battery charger: my Desire won't communicate at all with the PC - I have it set to sync and charge: it charges, but there is no sign of sync not any sign that it is connected.  I've tried re-installing the HTC Sync program, setting the layout back to the original ... I have a lot of info on it which I don't want to lose (some was backed up last time when it did work).  I've had the machine just a week ... HELP!!  Thanks

I had the same problem when plugging it to the front USB ports on my PC.  I then inserted the cable in one of the USB ports at the back, and it suddenly worked.

I blame it on witchcraft.

My Desire connected to the pc normally. But asked: Please insert disk in drive ...
Soltution: format SD card within the phone SD card settings.

Settings, SD & Phone Storage, Unmount SD card (altough its grey), Format SD card, etc.

Restart Phone. Connect to pc. All worked fine. Even the root data was still on the SD Card.

Cheers,

Frank

I also subscribe to the rear USB port theory.
I could not get it to work until I plugged into the rear MB USB ports, same thing can happen with my wireless keyboard and mouse too when trying to hit the BIOS settings.
My way to get it to work was to remove the MicroSD card and put it in my card reader, install the Synch software from the MicroSD card and then reboot the Desire. Wait until it has booted fully and plug it into a REAR (MB) USB port and it worked fine. Lucky for me I got a spare USB cable because I bought the car adaptor, so I can leave it plugged into the rear USB all the time.
The name of the game is take it from the rear I do believe.  Wink

Same problem here, does not work with rear USB port or the front. Using original data cable. Perform a hard reset and upgraded to version 2.2, but it did not help. can be connected only after the phone restart and it works a couple of hours.

Quick note about the cable, not only does the car charger not work for exchange of data, generic usb cables don't either. I bought one to use as a spare charger cable or spare data cable but have found it will only work for charging.
