I’m looking into an SD card error that my phone is showing, and wondering if anyone else knows about it!

I have had my HTC desire for over a year now (still love it!  Smiley) and have now received this error twice - “SD card damaged. You may have to reformat it”.

The first time, I was prompted with the error and the option to reformat. I did this, frustrated, as there was some data related to the apps that I relied on, as well as some photos I hadn’t had a chance to back up. Stupid me, I did think that it wast possible to back up apps. I went to my apps on the SD card (through manage apps) to see if it had indeed wiped all my apps, and found it appeared that there was some app related files there.

I then re-installed two apps I used and found that my history had been picked up, so I assumed that data files seemed to be still on the SD card. No such luck with any photos in the Gallery  Sad

The error then occurred again! I haven’t attempted to reformat again, but now decided to look into this error as much as possible and attempt to recover anything, if possible.

From doing a Google search I have found similar errors by other HTC users, and relevant issues around the card the same error being received, and the card becoming corrupted.  The user is then often unable to access the contents, and sometimes the card size has become reduced after reformatting.

I assume I will need to reformat the SD card, and have heard about a ‘recovery’ app that I’m hoping I may be able to retrieve the non-backed up data and photos. I’m even hoping that I may be able to view files by my laptop if I use a card reader, and hopefully copy these across to my laptop.

I did also see mentions by one or two Users where they found this issue occurred after installing the ‘text to speech’ app. And thinking back I do remember attempting to install the same app prior to receiving the SD card error message.

Is anyone familiar with these issues? Offer any suggestions on Apps to recover data? Or even reformatting an SD card? Or if the card is corrupted, then maybe I shouldn’t use the card again?

And then maybe I should also ask, what is the best way to back up any apps in future  Embarrassed

Well, the best option in my opinion is to turn off the phone, remove the microSD, and mount it to a windows 7 system using a card reader. Copy all data from the SD card to a folder on the pc. Format the card, check for errors including bad sector check. (Right Mouse Button on the SD's partition -> properties -> tools) If some sectors are corrupted the checkdisk program will mark them as bad in the file allocation table (FAT) and ur filesystem on the card will not use bad sectors again (hopefully) then copy all data back to the card, preform a clean unmount in windows (very important) put it back in the phone, and boot it up..

Just to be shure u can remove the partition on the card (after data backup fcourse, see Right Mouse Button on "computer" in start menu -> manage -> disk management) create a new partition same format as the one u deleted, fat or ntfs, not shure.. then preform the checkdisk..

I hope this will help. If not, get a new SD card :p
But mounting it to a windows pc with a card reader, not on the phone is most effective way for complete backup..

For recovery i suggest u use a tool like r-studio on the pc. With card in cardreader, not in phone, but beware, any data overwritten is lost whatsoever. But u may be able to recover some files.. and scanning takes long Cheesy

Thanks very much for that!! Unfortunately my laptop doesn't seem to recognise the card either. I guess I'll just have to try reformatting it now :-(

I appreciate your help!!

Oh my.. when ur laptop doesnt recognize the card, in my eyes, chanses of using the card again properly are very slim. When u connected it to the laptop, did u look in the "disk management" tool for an extra device? Or did u search for a partition in "computer" (vista/7) or "my computer" (xp) cause if the partition is dead, windows cannot mount the partition, but will see the device in disk management. If so, u might be able to make a new partition. Otherwise, throw it away, and get a new card.. its dead, and so is the data. Lesson learned: make a weekly backup of any photos on the laptop!

I was having the same problem last time, SD memory card shows needs to be formatted error but I have important data on the SD card. But do not worry as I have found the solution. You can follow this step by step memory card recovery tutorial to fix the memory card error and recover data from the memory card.

You can just connect SD card to computer with a card reader, and then format it on computer.
