Hi guys,
I own a Desire A8181.
I recently began having problems with my phone.
For some reason, the phone sometimes shuts down during a conversation, with no obvious reason. It doesn't reboot - just shuts down.
Then when I turn it on, it seems to delete the last 5 minutes or so of activity on the phone (I noticed this since there are calls missing from the call history).

Can you point me in the direction of what could be causing this problem?

Thanks,
Alon

alon,

Sounds like a software issue, so this certainly is not the problem this thread is about.  I'd suggest backing up your contacts, messages etc and doing a factory reset.  That usually solves any software issues.

Dear all,

An update from the front-line: I've posted a while ago about having serious forced re-boots, crashes and overheating.

Following various failed attempts to repair myself, I've handed over the device back to T-Mobile UK for repair.

Looking at the online service tracker at the time the repair was quickly escalated to highest level and sent to manufacturer for motherboard replacement. This was expected following various posts here and around the net.

The device was with them for 2 months(!). I found out this was due to shortage of parts.

I got the device back a few days ago and I'm in the process of taking it through its paces to see how things are.

Repair was free under warranty.

Fingers crossed this will be the beginning of a new, stable future for us. From what I've read on the Net this is usually the best solution.

My advice for others suffering from similar issues: Read posts online, familiarise yourself with the issues and give it up for repair. It may be the only hope. Check quoted lead times but be prepared for a long wait.

Hope it helps.

God I wish I had seen this before
I just bought a secondhand desire, I was allowed to return it within the first week, today is day 8 and it has just started rebooting all the time... worst $200 I ever spent.
ARGH
called HTC said that the transfer wasnt sanctioned by them and thus the warranty is voided. They also quoted me at about 150 to get it fixed which seeing as what I got the phone for is terrible.  My only hope is that Mazumba mobile will buy the phone for $161 which is still annoying as hell. HTC needs to own up to its mistake and fix it even if its outside of warranty.

oh and its a HT06 if that helps

i've had the phone back for the last 3 months roughly now and it's been faultless, even with constant use and battery temps touching 50 degrees it's worked perfectly.

before i might get 20 mins use out of the satnav before the phone would reboot.

There have been several studies of this problem and the issue is clearly temperature related. HTC acknowledge that the processor shuts down if it gets too hot but have not published any remedy or admitted that it is their problem. The effect becomes more of an issue when the processor works hard, such as when dealing with multimedia and gps, particularly when multiple processes are taking place at the same time and when charging. This is a design fault and is due to component position and variations in electronic tolerances, which may acccount for not everyone having the problem or it not being so frequent. It is possible that the problem could be addressed by reducing the clock rate on the processor through the firmware, but this would have some effect on performance. I am still waiting for HTC to respond. In Europe we may have some redress to non-response by invoking the law related to the suitability of a product to effectively do the job it was designed for, even outside of the warrantee period.

My Htc desire has been experiencing the same problem for the past few weeks..Updating it to 2.3.3 has only made it worse!! The phone restarts even before the HTC home menu is displayed. Did the hard and soft reset advised by HTC but still no change..

Hi I'm new to this forum, but I thought I'd register because I find it extremely civilized and helpfum :-)

I also have a reboot/overheating problem. My phone has been working great for alsmot a year. But I decided to root it and change rom because I had at the very max two days worth of battery life.

I now have the rreboot/overheating problem, which has been going on for several weeks. I have a rooted phone, with an oxygen rom. The phone started shutting down from time to time during a conversation, then overheating anytime I would charge it (USB or power plug).

I recently reflashed it with the oxygen rom, which seems to solve the issue (five days without charging). I recharged it yesterday and badaboom, the phone remains stuck on the htc logo. I read all the posts from your forum (and others), tried removing the battery and so on, nothing seems to be working. Rebooting in recovery doesn't work either.

I have sent an e-mail to htc, and they tell me to send it back. I'm convinced it is a hardware failure, but I'm afraid they'll refuse to repair it because it is rooted.

Does anyone have any experience in this matter? It is possible or them to see that it has been rooted, even though it won't start?

I don't want to pay for the shipping if it is not repaired :-(

Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated :-)

Thanks a zillion :-)

Hi, I have been there too, it's the 3rd time this year that the motherboard was replaced in my Desire. First in March, then in June and finally last week... It's really annoying but at least i still have 6 months of warranty left, so repairs are for free. My device is not rooted, only the factory sw updates were installed. At first it started rebooting when i used the GPS in the car. The second time it would never turn on anymore, and the last time it rebooted when i used the browser, nothing else. I assume there's something else wrong than the motherboard that is causing it over time to fail...
It's a pretty bad ration that in 10 months my phone spent 8 weeks in repairs...

My wife has a rooted Desire that is a couple of months older than mine, and is faultless ever since.  So I have mixed feelings about this device. I guess my next phone won't be from HTC...  Angry

Thanks for your answer. Sorry to hear about all your troubles..

I managed to reflash it using a file from shippedroms. It is now unrooted, with an official rom and, it seems to work flawlessly ! I managed to charge it completely, without any reboot... Charging the battery seemed to take much longer than before. I have been using it for 2 days and still have 50% autonomy :-)

However, I am not at all convinced the problem came from the custom rom, I flashed various other roms, and still had the problem :-)

Well at least it is now 100% official and ready to be shipped if necessary...

I will now see how it reacts when in charge.

Hallo,
I have a HTC desire too, which is getting hot and then reboots itself. When I read the comments here, I must conclude, that HTC is not really interested in the problem. This may change when the matter comes into publicity.
Is it an idea to interest some consumer TV programs for this problem? Or is this already done so?

Phoned Orange today (Wednesday) to report this problem with my Desire, which is nearly 2 years old, and the operator said he was sending me a new phone tomorrow morning .  .  . wow! No arguments and very nice too! This comes with a 90 day additional guarantee and I do not have insurance. I was told at the Orange shop that they could be asked me to pay for insurance in retrospect but I was not asked to pay. Let's hope this resolves the problem although in 90 days I am due  to upgrade . . . to HTC?Huh
