Hi folks

I've recently been given an HTC Desire by my mum, who upgraded to some newer phone.

Since I've had it, I haven't been able to get the GPS to work. I'd assume it was a hardware error, but mum says she had no problems with the GPS. I did do a restore-to-factory-settings when I got the phone.

Anything I can do to try to fix the problem?

There's a free app in the marketplace called "GPS status".
Try installing that, and see if it shows any response from your GPS receiver.

Wohoo! Excellent! I grabbed that app, used it to clear my GPS data (apparently that gets stored in a separate place to everything else), let it run, and was just about to reply "it doesn't work" when yellow satellite marks appeared on the display. So thanks heaps, it's working now!

Ok, I spoke too soon. It looks like what's happening is that it's taking forever to get my location every time I want to use it. I usually keep the GPS turned off to avoid using more power - would this be the cause of the problem? How much battery time does it drain while enabled even if I'm not specifically using it?

It is only powered up when an application asks for it, i.e. when you can see the satellite icon on the notification bar.
When it's off, the GPS is off.
When it's flashing, the GPS is trying to lock onto the satellites.
When it's on solid, you have a lock.

(the setting you are playing with just allows programs to use the GPS, it doesn't turn it on).

Mine only comes on when I have a program which requires it running in the foreground (maps, latitude), or if I'm running a Navi program with an active route (in which case it stays on, even when the Navi program is in the background.)

Also depends if you are indoors or outdoors. Outdoors it should get a lock within 3 minutes from a cold start, probably within 20 seconds from a warm start (Cold start is where you start up GPS lets say after a few hours of no GPS, warm start would be where you get a full lock on GPS, switch it off then switch it back on withing a few minutes). If you are indoors you may never get a GPS lock, depends what the building is made of.

Leaving GPS on constantly is a mega battery drain

I was outside when I tested it, and I'm pretty sure I hadn't cold-booted it since I got the data the first time. I'll try again to double check.
