Just wanted to make sure if this is a common issue or something wrong with my handset (so that I can try getting it replaced).

When I hear calls using phone's default speaker, the sound comes okay till one volume level. If I move up, the sound distorts.

If I use speaker-phone, things are worse. After a certain level, sound crackles a lot.

For music via phone's loud speaker, the sound doesn't crackle. But as identified by many, I can hear music with no bass & lots of treble.

Is this normal for Desire?

Comparing it with my wife's N95 (which has stereo speakers) was a nightmare for me.

I had the N95 too. Its speakers are much better (if you open the device you'll see the they are much bigger.)

The Desires one is really disappointing.

I've had my Desire one week and noticed the speaker quality is poor, especially on speakerphone. It's just one of the problems and I am really disappointed after so much hype. Android may be faster for surfing, but I'm beginning to think it's rubbish as an OS for mobiles.

It's being replaced for another reason, so I shall see if there's an improvement.

I have the same issue as described in the first post.

I was concerned and tried calling some voice automated services and the voice clarity was fine with no crackles, but when i speak with several different people the quality does sound quite bad and there is even some breakup in their speech that it becomes difficult to understand them!

Is this a common issue??

Just received my Desire yesterday.  First thing I noticed is that my speakerphone sounds raspy and tinny.  The higher the volume the worse the sound.  Phone calls through the earpiece are stellar.  A little low in volume maybe but no distortion.  Should I question my carrier about it?  I use my speakerphone a lot and I would like to know if this is a common issue or did I receive a dud?

Issue is due to poor design. The phone doesn't have a noise cancelling mic. Getting a replacement might solve it, but don't hold your hopes up...
