right ... there can be several causes, but only one solution.  A complete format (meaning you'll lose all the data on the card).  This procedure needs to be followed exactly.  Especially the first step is crucial.

Put the card in a different phone (no HTC, no PC ... EDIT : and no Mac) and format it.
Put it back in your Desire
Boot the phone
go to Settings -> SD & phone storage
Select "unmount SD card"
Now that the card is unmounted, select "Format SD card"

After telling the phone a few times that you really DO want to do that, it'll format and mount the card, and the ReadOnly status should be gone.

I actually formatted a card to verify these steps, but seeing as it didn't have problems to begin with, I was unable to verify that this would solve such a problem.  However there are reports of this procedure's success.

--------

EDIT : Just read you used a Mac.

I recall a post (in a different forum) where the person contacted HTC for this exact same problem, abeit on an Evo.
HTC claimed that their phones and mac aren't compatible, and that they have no intention of making them compatible.  They even went as far as saying that connecting the phone to a mac IS KNOWN to cause the ReadOnly problem.

You didn't happen to get this problem after connecting the phone to your mac, did you?

You're welcome.

Don't modern Macs have an option to boot in Windows too?  Maybe that would work.  After all, when it comes to hardware they're not different from a regular PC anymore now that they use Intel chips.  So I guess it's all down to the way the OS handles things.
(then again, I converted to PC back when my Powerbook 140 and my Mac IIsi were running System 7.1 , and never paid any attention to Mac ever since.  So I'm not familiar with OSX and modern Macs)

If you can boot your Macbook in XP/Vista/W7 and have easy access to another MicroSD-compatible phone, it might be worth the hassle of investigating this option.  It could enable you to attach the Desire to your Macbook after all, and save other Mac users a lot of trouble.

Sure can.  After the double format, you can write on it again.  So simply copy all the contents of the card to your PC and then back again.

It doesn't happen too often on a PC, but ... did you use iTunes before it went in ReadOnly mode?

Dear all

Had the same problem with my HTC Desire under Android 2.2

It happened after I cut and pasted pictures from /DCIM directory to my hard drive.

I fixed the problem by connecting the phone to my Windows 7 computer (may require restart of the computer and/or the phone). Then, go to My Computer and right-click on the SD Card Volume that shows next to your DVD player. Select Properties, then Tools tab and click on "Verify Errors" (or sthg like that, I translated from French OS). This utility will check the disk and repair whatever has to be repaired. It took 5-10 minutes and my SD card is now back in the game! (no data loss, no need to format)

The report provided at the end of the repair stated that it was, indeed, the /DCIM directory that caused problems.

Hope that helps for others

Cheers,
Matt

Hi guys

I've got this problem with the Desire as well.  I've only had the phone two days, haven't linked it up with any computers and haven't downloaded many apps at all.

Can someone explain how to 'format' the SD card when I put it into another phone?  I'm not exactly well versed in such things!

Thanks in advance

Andrew

Andrew,

Every type of phone can have a different menu, so I wouldn' know how to format the card.  I guess the other phone's manual will have that kind of info.  Just make sure that other phone is NO HTC.

I had same problem after copying music from a mac book to my Desire 2.2

I put sd card into an XP windows machine. Right click and select properties. Then tools - error checking. Run with automatically fix file system errors checked.
It ran the error check and said check complete. No indication if it found anything.

Put the card back in the phone and all now seems OK. No need to re-format and no data lost.

i've had this problem for about a month on my Desire-z with a sandisk 4gb card. don't know how to permanetly fix it, but if you pull down the notification tray, and poke the sd-card error, it will remount it with the read only cleared. how long till it goes back to read only?Huh

I think this is absolutely an issue that is caused when you don't set your phone to 'charge only' after mounting the disk drive on PC or Mac or whatever. I've done this a few times after getting a call and wanting to step away from the PC.

Then certain APPS like Spotify which needs to synch huge amount of data to SD card just makes the matter worst. The HTC Desire card reader will then go tits up bonkers.

And I really think there's NO NEED to reformat your entire SD card. What I did was simply mount your SD card on your PC and run CHKDSK utility, fix all errors and now voila, no problems!

I used to have my SD card unmount on its own while running Google Maps and WIFI. Now, all fixed. Grin

Definitely an issue with HTC Desire's card reader, but as with Android, the fix is very easy Smiley
