Does your phone show you it is connected?
If you pull down the notification bar, you should see a notification about what mode the connection is in. If it is on "Charge only", change it to "HTC Sync" and touch "done".

Hi, my laptop would not recognise my Desire, either as a disk or in HTC Sync. Tried changing every setting. The only thing that worked was removing the battery and then switching on again.
