My HTC desire suddenly has no signal/service from 2 days ago and can't connect to the network anywhere (everything else still works). The only thing i can think that might've "triggered" this is the battery running out. I bought my desire online sim-free so I dont know how easy it is to get a replacement, can someone help me please? Thanks in advance.

I get this periodically too - I'm on Orange, having bought a Sim-Free desire to plug in my old sim card.

I power off (hold the 'on button down for a while - I discovered that one by accident: its easier than removing the battery!).  Leave it powered off for a minute or so, then switch on again - when it settles down and loads everything back in - takes just a minute or so - the connection is back.

Maybe its a fault in the HTC.  I have downloaded the latest latest version 2.2x.

Thnx for the help but that didn't work, the signal has probably been "absent" continously for 2 days now. I don't have insurance or anything so I don't know how easy/cheap it is for me to get a new one.  Sad

No need for insurance.  If it's a fault and you still have proof of your purchase, I'd contact the company you bought it from.

Or did you buy it second-hand?  That could complicate things indeed.  You'd have to find out where the original owner bought the phone, get a copy of his proof of purchase and take it to that shop/company.

Just tried my SIM card in another phone, works fine. Just tried another SIM card in my phone, same problem. So must be the phone right...? Any other quick things I can check just before I send for a replacement?  Sad Thanks for the replies.

Only thing I can think of apart from a faulty sim would be that the phone is in airplane mode for some reason.  But I guess you'd notice that as it would replace the reception indicator with an airplane logo.

No the SIM isn't the faulty aspect, it works in another phone, and it's not in aeroplane mode. Would it be worth factory resetting or would that not have an effect. Ta in advance.

Well, if you're going to send it in for repairs, they'll either flash it completely or insert a new main board.  So all your data will be gone anyway.
In your case it doesn't hurt to try the factory reset.  If the reset doesn't solve it, at least you know that outsiders won't have access to all your personal info.

Back all your data up first, so you don't lose too much.

Could it be an APN issue ? IE is your APN high-lighted for Virgin.

Just made a strange and startling discovery that my phone also has no sound, not sure how I missed that! Looks like I'll have to get a replacement anyway! :p

Either a software problem or a loose comtact.  I suspect the latter.  Try a reset and if it doesn't work you cak take a clean phone to the shop.  If HTC know that you did a factory reset, they'll probably just replace the internals.

Seems to be a problem with the USB link as well! Sad Who do I send it back to? I bought it from Handtec.co.uk so do I send it back to them or HTC? Also the warranty says it doesn't cover "deterioration of the Product due to normal wear and tear" so does this mean I'll have to buy a new phone? :/ Thanks in advance, will do a factory reset once I work out how to get my photos off the phone... Angry

If you have a WiFi connection you could mail all the pictures to yourself and open the mails on the PC.  Or you can send them to any other phone via bluetooth and connect that one to a pc.  Those are the 2 best workarounds I can think of.

Ah, sorry, forgrot about that part.  Contact the site you bought it from to ask how they handle repairs.   This isn't normal wear, so it should be covered under warranty.
