I encounter this problem almost everytime i send a text message. I received the error "Unable to send message after multiple attempts" again and again and again. I use the "retry sending" option, turn my phone on and off until it finally works. Now for a phone so advanced i find it disappointing that i have to do this for a simple text message to go through. Also, when receiving a text message they can take up to an hour to actually come through. This has nothing to do with signal as i almosts always have full bars and a couple of my mates have the same phone and are experiencing the same problem.

Are there any known solutions to this problem?

Same here, picture messaging on my Desire is even worse. How embarrassing that a phone of this calibre can struggle with such a basic task.  Angry

I am new and have only just got my phone.

I have found I can neither send or receive texts. Is this a common problem?

Any help, please.

Hi, I am having a similar problem. It seems to be with a specific mobile number at present. My sister will text me and when I type a reply it fails straight away. If I go to message details it shows the number I am trying to send the message to as 044*****etc when it should be +44. No matter what I do when I try to send a message to my sister as a reply it keeps doing it. I have tried resetting the phone, deleting her number and all her texts but to no avail. I have trawled the net and cannot find anyone reporting the same problem...

Beardy.

Mmm my sisters number began +44 too so I changed it to the full number and sent an mms but that still failed. Maybe we got a bad batch of Desires? My texts seem ok, they just fail periodically, but mms messages wont send or they go through as failed.

This isnt really a fix, but I found that if u delete the "thread" of the conversation to the person it is failing to send to, then it works most of the time!  I hope they do a fix for this soon as it is REALLY starting to get on my t$%^

Hope that helps.

I cancelled my contract with Virgin and took one out with Orange. I must admit that I was tempted to go for the samsung galaxy s due to the messaging problems on the desire, But I gave the desire another chance. Glad I did....the messaging works!!!....for now?

I am with orange and had this issue. It took a while to fix.

For mine it appeared the Access Point Name settings had become corrupt as we checked them many times and they were spot on. I had to create a new APN with the same settings and delete the old one. Works perfectly now.

It seems to happen when I either install specific things from the Android Market, or mount the phone as a hard drive via the USB (the option that allows you to transfer files backwards and forwards).

It has happened again since and I did the same with the APN and it works.

The APN settings are created through Settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names.

Your settings are probably owned by your provider so check with them. If they are already there (With Orange it is listed as Orange MMS), then note the settings and create a new APN with exactly the same settings but a slight name change e.g. 2 at the end. Delete the old one and rename the new one to the original name.

This works for me, but cant guarantee it will work for you - depends on the nature of the problem...

Still cant get the thing to send a damn vidoe message though - they are always bigger than the settings will allow Grrrrr...

Yep this desire with orange started to fail at sending picture messages yesterday. It seemed to happen when I attempted to send an MMS while there was a dip in signal strength (In fact there was no signal at that point) Then even with a signal it just kept saying Generic network failure.
So I followed rmdphillip's advice. This seemed to work! Although I only had to change my apn name (orangemms2) then it seemed to send picture messages ok again.
But, the thing that I've noticed with sending MMS on the desire is that when the message has sent and has been received, it remains as "pending" on the message report? This happened with my previous desire also....when I could get it to send a picture that is. Anyone else noticing this? or can solve this?

Hey

Was scouring the internet and found this thread, after a bit of searching. I have exactly the same problem as above - my brand new (picked up yesterday) HTC Desire seems to have taken a violent dislike to my best friend's number, and will do absolutely everything I ask of it except text/call him. He called me earlier (to see if I'd been a doofus and put his number in wrong), but it came up with contact info and the call was fine. Tried to text again, and the rather vague message 'Unable to send message after multiple attempts' pops up immediately. I've turned it off and on, taken out the battery, taken it into Orange and asked a guy there who owned one and seemed utterly baffled.

I also checked the +44 problem I noticed a couple of people had, but no joy. Any ideas, please?

After browsing on the HTC Wildfire forum I noticed that the same problems exists on there too, thus making this a HTC problem, definitely!

As with all SMS and MMS problem threads, my main advice would be to turn the delivery reports and read reports OFF, both for SMS and MMS.

HTC uses a non-standard method of asking these reports, and several phone types don't seem to understand this request.  As a result, the message never gets delivered.

I'm having this problem too. It tends to happen with my brother's number a lot, it seemed to force the issue if i wrote a new message rather then responding to the one he's sent. But over the past couple of days it started doing it to both my housemates, and today I've only had 1 text message send problem free.

I've also had problems getting a call to connect, I just get a beep then it cuts off. It's been an absolute nightmare today so I tried the fixes here and nothing's worked (tried restarting a couple of times too), I still cant even make calls.

I'm not one for hyperbole, and can accept that every piece of technology is going to have its issues from time to time, but that so many people seem to be having this problem, and so soon after getting their phones is pretty poor

I myself own a HTC Desire phone and have encountered this problem before. I found a way which might help you. (It worked for me.)

Instead of pressing your contact's name and pressing 'send message', instead, go to your messages and press 'new message'. After that, just type in the contact's name you wish to send a text to as it says and send them a message. It worked for me, let's hope it works for you!
