If you get a reply, please let us know.

Judging by all the solutions we've found so far (and which didn't work in your case), I guess they'll ask you to send the phone back for repairs.
But then again it wouldn't be the first time that HTC had one more trick up their sleeve that we couldn't possibly think of.

Yes, they've asked me to send it back for repair. I'll let you know how I get on with that.

I finally solved Wi-Fi error problem by downgrading to previous firmware version ("2.09.405.8") and then updating again to "2.10.405.2". Everything was done running .exe update files on PC connected to Desire (not via Wi-Fi It's improtant!!!)

Hi Ahnmel, that sounds interesting. Can you give us more specific instructions about how to do that please?

OK
1. Download this update: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe   (login and password: shipped).
2. Connect Desire to PC via usb cable.
3. Run downloaded .exe file (HTC Sync is required) and wait for downgrade to finish. After downgrade Wi-Fi should be OK again.
4. Upgrade to latest 2.2 version: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe   as was described before.
After this upgrade Wi-fi should work.
Avoid upgrading via Wi-Fi in the future, use .exe files instead.

Nope, that didn't work for me either. I installed the two updates, but it hasn't fixed the problem.

I noticed that when I was running the first update 2.09.405.8, that's what was already on the phone. I ran that update but it didn't fix the problem. I ran 2.10.405.2 anyway and that is now on the phone, but I still can't get wi-fi.

By the way, I thought I'd try running the two updates a second time just in case, and now I get "Error 140 Bootloader Version Error" when I try to run the first update. Is that significant?

What version of firmware was on your phone before it lost wi-fi?
The point is to restore your initial firmware with working wi-fi and then upgrade again via PC.
If you get Error 140 then you have to downgrade/upgrade using so called "Goldcard", see instructions here:  http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/blog/20100822-how-debrand-htc-desire-update-froyo
Good luck!

Hi, just had the exact same problem - upgraded to latest OTA 2.2 update (v. 2.10.405.2). Everything worked ok, except no more wifi. Did a little searching around and found this forum Smiley Did some more searching and problem now fixed - phone now running 2.10.405.2, upgraded OTA, wifi working.

So as far as I can tell, this mainly (only?) effects people who've unbranded their phone. Main cause of the problem seems to be upgrading without a working Goldcard installed in the device (I thought the card in my phone was a working Goldcard, turns out it wasn't).

First, ensure the current SD card is a Goldcard (probably worth doing this afresh). Download the previous version of the HTC Desire Rom, downgrade your phone. You can then upgrade over the air and it should all work fine (did for me anyway!).

Easiest way to make a new Goldcard - download and run 'GoldCard Tool'
http://www.klutsh.com/

HTC Desire Rom link from previous post didn't work for me, so I used this instead:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe

I've tried a number of the suggestions here, but no success.

Tried downloading he .exe and taking the phone back, but get Error 171 connection errors.
Have got through this once and got Error [131] PLease get the correct ROM update and try again.

I've got an unlocked Desire, shipped out of Hong Kong to NZ. I'm currently in the UK with a Vodafone UK SIM in it. Everything's been great until last night when I stupidly said yes whe I got prompted for an OTA upgrade. Since then I've had a Wi-Fi Error and unable to connect Wi-Fi.
I was already running 2.2

The fact that the suggested ROM are Bravo not Desire. Does this make a difference?

Can anyone suggest other options or how to work through this in simple speak (not too techy).
Thanks.

Hi there,

I had a an unbranded and unlocked HTC desire with an orange sim. After a small OTA update, the wifi started to show an error message. I tried all the solutions here but none worked. The solution that helped me was as follows:

After applying the latest OTA update onto the recently debranded froyo update (Software number 2.10.405.2), I found that wi-fi was bricked. The latest OTA update included a radio upgrade. My phone had my usual sd card which was NOT a goldcard. I found that the radio version did not update but that the rest of the software did.

The solution for this particular issue was posted in the comments of the original article http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-desire-receives-performance-update

i.e. Solution for bricked wifi (after applying 2.10.405.2 update to a debranded phone) if you did not use your goldcard:

i) Put the goldcard back in the phone, download the update from the htc website: http://fotadl.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_HTC_EU_2.10.405.2-2.09.405.8_releaseol2djq7rqarka2ka.zip

ii) rename that to update.zip and place on the root of your sd card (the goldcard!)

iii) Apply the update.zip just as you would have for the froyo update

and your wi-fi works again!

Here are the final details for comparison:
HBOOT screen this time:
—-
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.09.05.30_2
Aug 10 2010,17:52:18
—-

and the Software Information Screen
—-
Android version: 2.2
Baseband version: 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
Kernel version: 2.6.32.15-g6a358a9, htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build number: 2.10.405.2 CL226611 release-keys
Software number: 2.10.405.2
Browser version: WebKit 3.1

If you don’t use your goldcard, HBOOT and RADIO does not get updated. Hope that helps!

Hope it helps. If you have no idea what a gold card is then see this guide:

Judging by the other posts here, I'm beginning to think you're right.
Unfortunately some people have bought the phone from websites or companies which sell de-branded phones as unbranded ones, and as a result they get all sorts of errors when applying the update.

If you have problems and are unaware or uncertain about your phone's nature, contact HTC and ask for information on your IMEI number.  They'll tell you if it was branded by default, and if so for which operator and which country too.
You'd be surprised how many Desires end up thousands of miles from where they were intended to be.

Hi HTC Freakster

Everything you've out here makes sense. The only reason I have paused before doing the update is the EU in the zip file. Is this a European update?

My phone is Ex Singapore. Can you confirm is this update appears correct or point me to a link for the OTA for the Singapore/South East Asia.

Thanks.

You can check by finding out if you have the A8181 or A8183 version.  The former is the European version that I also believe is for Asia, the A8183 is America and Australia I think.

The only way I am aware of to find this information out is to look on the original box that your phone came in.

@14Data

Yes it's a European update and can't confirm if it will work for Asia. My model is HTC desire A8181.
The links i have provided have a wealth of info-may answer your specific query. Otherwise you could email HTC in Asia asking about the small update if it is provided by them for direct download.

Gud luck.

HTC freakster.
