Ok, so the process is now complete, and root access has been gained for the fantastic phone that is the HTC Desire. There are a number of reasons why you might want to root your HTC Desire:

    * Store apps on your sdcard instead of phone memory. So no more running out of space to install apps!
    * Get rid of those stupid demo apps your provider adds to your phone.
    * Turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot. Other devices can connect via wireless and share your phones internet
    * Take screenshots of your phone from your phone.
    * Better memory management, your phone will never slow down!
    * Overclock your phone, more speed! (If possible!)
    * Full backup ability. Backup your whole phone state. Restoring this backup puts your phone in the exact same condition as the backup.
    * Use 'Market Enabler' to access paid apps if currently unavailable in your country.

Lets get on with this then!

Hi,
Rooted my Desire last night......I think (as all seemed to go as planned),

How do I know it has been rooted, and how do I get the extra features to run ie, apps saved to the SD card.

Cheers.

Let me know what its like once you start to play with it being rooted. I have rooted the G1 and put the 2.1 eclair on and it is cool, but bloody slow.lol.
Let me know the things you have done/are going to do to your phone now its rooted.
Cheers

Mine still runs fine, no lag when surfing, but like I said I don't know if it has actually been rooted, all I can remember was the build number changing during the rooting process, and mine is now 1.15.405.4 this is the same for the software as well, can anyone confirm this is the rooted build/software numbers?

Right, I have now found many walkthroughs to root my desire, but I am wandering, do I lose the sense ui? Or does the phone stay exactly the same, except I have super user priveleges?
Also, can someone share the link to the walkthrough they used, and did you have to create a "goldcard" (your sd card thing)?

Cheers

I used the link above, and yes I did create a Gold card, the Sense Ui is still the same, i have read that by just looking at the phone you would not be able to tell that it has been rooted.

But I still need someone to confirm if mine has actually been rooted by checking the build/software number above, has it actually changed, has anyone got an unrooted Desire who can check their build/software numbers and see if they are different from the one I have above?

Hmmmm, have just checked the post with the most recent Firmware numbers, and I have the same number as a Sim Free mobile, does this mean it has worked?Huh  Someone please enlighten me.

You should have a super user icon under all programs

Right, I have JUST rooted the desire and it is running as it should be. Any tips for having a rooted phone (apps, etc.)? Also, how do you get paid apps for free?

Good place to start would be to go to 4shared via the internet on your phone,
In the search box put apk and you will get a list of apps compatible with Android.

What i did was went to the Android store and checked out the top paid apps then searched for them on 4shared.
I am wondering though if getting apps this way will still work on a non rooted phone, I can't seem to get the Market Enabler app to work...(doubt I doing the right thing anyway)

Does anybody know of an app that will tell me when an update has been released for the ROM used in the rooting of the desire?

Right, after looking around, updating the custom rom is actually a simple process. Here is the walkthrough:
1. Download the custom rom you want to use (Don't unzip it)
2. Connect your phone and mount to PC
3. Put the custom rom onto sd card (Still zipped)
4. Turn on phone in recovery (press and hold volume down and power button)
5. Connect phone to pc and run the "recovery-windows.bat" file from the pushfiles downloaded when rooting phone
6. select nand backup
7. Once backup complete, press "volume down" to go back a menu
8. Select "flash update"
9. Select the custom rom that was downloaded
10. Voila - You have a new rom AND you don't lose contacts or apps!!  Grin Grin

Hope this helps everyone!!
