If you search for how to downgrade your bootloader to 0.75 (i think), it will show you the process. I think the website (cant remember what it was) that I used to root my phone, it had a section to downgrade to an older bootloader to root phone.

Well, rooting a phone gives you superuser permissions so you can get certain apps for overclocking your ram/checking cpu usage, etc.
I download my custom roms from modaco where they create "Prebaked" roms. This means it includes all standard features with a few extra features (wavesecure,etc.- these can be downloaded from market place (i think)). So, to some people, this may seem a waste of time. But I am now running froyo 2.2 with 720p video recording, etc. So it is more of a choice whether to have the latest roms or not. I am loving having 2.2 as my mate who has a standard 2.1 desire is really excited about the 2.2 update.

Enjoy your rooted phone. What custom ROM are you using and what features does it have?

This one's for the 'class room prefects' Marlin and sxi-boy (I mean that as a compliment!)
Here goes:
I'm locked on T-Mobile in UK. If I root:
*will I lose my sms and mms settings - if so is it just as easy to get them from T-Mobile?
*will I still have Sense UI (with pinch function) or will it be the 'lots of scrolling icons' in pseudo 3D? (update: I now realise this is a 'Froyo' feature!)
*how long does rooting take?
*I see there are several ROM to choose from out there - are they all the same? What's the best one to use?
These are issues I've seen on other forums that have made me think twice about rooting and thought, you've been there, worn the proverbial t-shirt etc.

Thanks guys - you've probably worked out by now that I'm a noob!

Rooting a phone just gives you superuser permissions (Can put apps straight to SD card, gives you more power over how your phone runs, etc.)

When I rooted my phone and flashed the ROM's, none of my settings for SMS and MMS have been lost.

Wi-fi works without any issues.

The Sense UI will depend on the ROM that you flash your phone with. I have flashed a custom 2.2 from Modaco (If you google "HTC Desire modaco"). From this website you can find the latest rom for the desire. If you flash this, you will not lose your Sense UI as the ROM is based on the OTA update but includes other little features and no branding.  Grin

Rooting takes roughly 10 minutes, if that. The only lengthy process is downloading all the software you require (ROM's, etc.)

The main reason is that you can get custom ROM's long before they are released by the carriers (i.e. T-mobile). I'm with t-mobile and have been on 2.2 for over a month.

I think any of the issues raised in other forums are dependant on the roms and rooting process. I followed the rooting process from the link in this forum and got the roms from modaco as they have many comments so you can check it is stable before putting it on your phone.
Hope this helps. At the end of the day, it is all up to you whether you wait for the OTA update or do it yourself. Hope this helps

@sxi-boy - yes it does help lots. Thanks. I bought a micro SD card adapter this afternoon. I'll give it a go tonight (if the red wine wears off in time!) On second thoughts, tomorrow night, with a coffee might be a safer bet. Cheers mate! Will update all soon. Wink

I just used this 'Idiot's Guide' (coz it's easy!) and it worked.

FYI It works for hBoot8 and lower.

Hey there,

I have updated my desire to 2.2 and now I would like to try rooting it.
I have moved 6 or 7 apps to the sd card.

My bootloader is 0.92,  I can only find rooting instructions for previous versions.
Can someone point me in the right direction please...

I'd rather not downgrade to 0.80 if possible.

also i have a 4gb card, i was thinking about getting an 8gb, should I get this before or after rooting?
cheers..

Hi ,

I have upgraded my OS from 2.1 to 2.2 froyo(its abt 90 mb as somebody mentioned)..

But, I had a few questions:

1. I dont see the super user icon on menu right  now.As per the post above , after the ugrade it is suppose to come.

2. Also, How can move my already installed apps to the SD card, now that upgarde has happened. And, Will any subsequent apps downloaded, would go and automatically sit on the SD card or Should , Do any specific change for this ?

3. Also, as promised, the sweep feature is to be given while typing text messages..(Sweep is feaute, where user can drag over the keypad and the specific word is typed in.check gogle to know more) . I dont have any sweep feature as of now ..Would this feature be provided , post the upgrade ?

Awaiting some answers for these questions.

Thank You,
  Regards,
    Nigel
