My take on this issue :

If you happen to have an O2-branded Desire with a working 2.2 , DON'T shut the phone down.  Backup your data and contact O2 to ask if you need to send the phone back before it can develop problems.

Thanks Madubus

I have to admit that when it comes to mobile technology and jargon, I'm something of a newbie. Putting that aside, I thought to read up on 'updates' and 'rooting' as my Desire is a 'PAYG' O2 branded phone.

I have never checked for updates so having looked at the latest version of Android on my phone (in anticipation of needing to update it), I see that it is already 2.2. I have had no problems at all, even though I bought the phone a few months prior to the release of the new update.

Am I one of the lucky ones, and has the Android version on my phone been updated automatically? I can think of only one time when I actually turned the phone fully off, but the re-boot when switched back on was the same as always.

What should I look for in 'About Phone' to tell me if I have all the relevant software and hardware updates for my phone?

Cheers

O2 has been forced to pull the Android FroYo update for its network-locked HTC Desires. The boost to Android 2.2, which was only unleashed yesterday morning, has caused myriad issues with the top-end handset, reported by users on O2’s forums.
