If you are still waiting for the official gingerbread upgrade for your HTC Desire, this is good news for you, just head over to HTC Development center to download the update.

The major changes in this update include:

- All customizations, including operator applications, will be removed
- All wallpapers, except the default wallpaper, will be removed and placed online on the HTC Developer website
- Several HTC applications will be removed and placed online on the HTC Developer website
- The official Facebook application will be removed and is downloadable on the Android Market.

Note: This Rom update is for development only and not for general public use.  Upgrades to non-authorized phones may result in loss of functionality.  In addition certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS and HTC also disclaims liability for any unusable functions.  HTC disclaims liability for the loss and/or leakage of any personal data resulting from the re-flashing of the ROM.
Updated – The following regional variants are not compatible with this upgrade: Germany (Telekom Deutschland), North America, South Korea and Japan.

... and for those who do not want to flash it because they'd lose root, I made a flashable zip of it (with root).

There's a topic about it here

Vasp,

This one is for the regular Desire.
I don't know when (or even "if") the Z will get the update, but hardware limitations may make it impossible.  HTC really struggled to come up with 2.3 for the regular Desire, and even only released it in the developer section with a "use it at your own risk" warning.

As for the Z, there is a forum for that here.

-----

McGraw,

the default one, as linked to in the first post, is an RUU.  It's meant to be downloaded to the PC and opened from there, with the phone attached to it via the USB cable.

The one I made can be put on the SD card and installed from there, but it's only aimed at those who have rooted their phone.  Normal users can't install that one.  If you need to ask how to apply something like this, I already know your phone isn't rooted.

-----

And people, I can't stress this enough :

The update to 2.3 is NOT an official release like the normal updates.
This one is NOT aimed at the general audience.
HTC states that they can NOT guarantee that everything will work, so you're doing this
AT YOUR OWN RISK !

IF your phone gets messed up or if it doesn't function properly, you're on your own.  HTC does not give any support for this update, so it is doubtful that repairs and re-flashes to older software versions will be covered by warranty.

I dont know if my phone is rooted ..
If you don't know, then it is not. This would only happen if you had performed the steps to make it happen.

Correct. "Unlocked" and "Rooted" are totally unrelated.

Have few questions, hope someone can help Smiley

1. Is there any improvement in performance? Or has it degraded?
2. Any improvements in functionality?
3. Most imp, does it allow friend stream to sync with twitter? As 2.2 did not!

Also want to know will there be any chances of getting official upgrades for 2.2? If not then is there any way to fix the twitter sync issue??

thanks in advance.

I've been using it since a few hours after the release, and haven't encountered any serious issues yet.  There's just one thing I need to look at, but that's going to take a day or two to figure out.

Basically the OS feels a bit more zippy than 2.2 does.  Menus respond quicker, scrolling is smoother.  Quadrant scores are nearly identical, so no worries there.

The only thing that worries me is that I depleted the battery yesterday and found that 68% of the battery power went to the screen.
True, it was still on default settings and the phone had been in use for hours, but I've done that before when it was still running 2.2 and never saw such values.
This kind of value reminds me of the problems I've been having with my own Desire S (which runs 2.3.3 by default).  That phone is currently in for repairs, as this really is an issue that has a huge impact on battery life.
I'm going to leave my Desire alone for a day, and we'll see if the screen still uses a lot of battery.  If it does, this indicates a big issue with Android 2.3.3's built-in task manager.

All in all, there are a few things to consider.
- the new ROM feels faster then the old 2.2
- visually there are no real differences.  I had to check a few times to make sure it really was a gingerbread-based ROM.
- HTC has not tested it thoroughly and only released it as a developer tool, which means they'll give no support if there's an issue.
- HTC also states that they cannot guarantee any functionality.  I've encountered no issues so far, but then again I haven't made calls or sent/received taxt messages yet.
- If you really want to get it just to run the latest best thing, you might as well root the phone and go for a custom ROM.
- 2.2 looks the same, is marginally slower but at least is stable.  This one will still need to prove wether it's stable or not.

------

Ankushkool,

Regarding that twitter/friendstream issue : I've had that too a long time ago, but it just stopped after a factory reset.  You might want to consider that option, as it's not a general issue with 2.2 but merely the result of a software glitch.
If you want to apply that 2.3 update, the phone will be wiped as well, so you'll need to back up anything important either way.
You need to decide for yourself if you want to do a factory reset to a stable 2.2 or want to update to a 2.3 which HTC did not test thoroughly.

Imagevonourt,

If you had root, installing the RUU will indeed remove it.  An RUU wipes the entire internal memory, including your recovery.  That is the main reason why I ripped the RUU open and turned it into a flashable zip with root.  You can flash mine just like you would flash any ROM and replace it again afterwards.

Your only solution would be to look for an older RUU for your region and to flash that.  This will put an older Android on the phone, enabling you to use unrEVOked3 again to gain root.
