Out of the fires of desperation and the ashes of despair, rose the phoenix of genius, ascending to the robotic heaven of...

Root.

No, it's like a Bachelor of Android (Hons) Rooting. When you start out in life, and you wanna push forward into serious business, you try to get a university degree (note, I don't call it a college for a purpose). Well, rooting your phone is the first step to be taken seriously in the Android community. So, I would say, categorically, that rooting is very much unavoidable if you wanna progress from a plain user to a power/pro-user.

Do you recommend this tutorial:

No need for a "Goldcard" ?

I recommend this guide instead. Longer, more detailed, and written specifically for the Desire, and definitely more up to date than the Cyanogen Wiki.

Ok,the first update is done.BUT,next time when i try to update(to 2.2) it says that there aro no new updates for my phone/its up-to-date.  Sad

Damn,I really want 2.2 on my phone....

I performed the update without rooting...

There is this database of all the official HTC ROMs. I downloaded straight from there. 100-ish odd MB and there was no need to apply that 27-odd megs update, either.
