I'm new to HTC Desire, and trying to understand why I should root my phone. I did jailbreak my Iphone, but that was obvious for everyone - but it's not obvious to me why I should root my Desire.

What are the benefits of rooting the phone?

Titanium backup only runs on rooted droids and I can now ditch Orange's abortion that masquerades as bastardised 2.2 as well as disables hotspot and fills my phone with crap.
I've rooted thanks to sakai4eva's easy guide and now I'm just looking for the right rom, Leedroids looking good atm.

The full explanation is in my siggy, as an introduction to the root guide.

Since I hate to repeat myself, I'll give you a metaphor for the root experience....

*Piano introduction~
~Dang-dum-dang-dum-dang-dum-dang~

Imagine FroYo goodness...
It 's easy if you try.

No bloatware below us.
Above us only sky

Imagine all the people,
Rooting for today

Ah-ah, aah-ah-ah

Imagine one-click root
It isn't hard to do

All the hacks to die for
And no restrictions too

Imagine all the cool things...
We can all Desire...

Yu-hoo-uh-oooo-uh

You may say I'm a rooter.
But I'm not the only one.

I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will be as one.

p/s: John Lennon, RIP

Hmm.
Although I thought John Lennon was a bit of a faeceshead I can agree with the sentiment.
I've just flashed  Shocked a new ROM (first time) and although I still have to get to grips with some of the extras and reinstall some sh1t it is a much better phone.
Why did Orange nerf about 100meg of my memory with nothing useful going on?
My Wifi is better and my 3G is a little worse but I think I can install new radios till I find a good 'un.
I was a little worried about flashing  Shocked, but it was easy and my phone feels cleaner and faster while looking the same.

Anyone else think flashing  Shocked is wrong?

Let's not go down there, shall we? Smiley

Well, I seldom listen to the Beatles, but "Imagine" by John Lennon usually brings a tear to my eyes, and I wrote it on the day when it was his 70th birthday (thanks Google!). I also watched on Glee season 1, where a group of deaf and dumb kids used sign language to mime out the words. Really touching moment.

Hi folks, first post here........hi Peter Tongue

Rooting is the same as Jail breaking.

Essentially you are granting low level access to your device so apps can use this access to run and do things that we are NOT supposed to do.

To achieve this low level access various methods can be used. But the end result is generally the same.

Rooting is technically what Jail breaking is doing. Just a different phrase.

Good luck and ROOT is BEST

Cool

jailbreaking =!= rooting.

Jailbreaking implies doing hank-panky. Rooting is just granting administrator access rights.

While the analogy is appreciated, Androids were born free.

i agree with sakai4eva. I was an iphone user once, and a jailbroken iphone is almost the same as an unrooted android phone. Actually, an unrooted android phone is still better.

That's what she said Smiley

LOL, totally random, I know, but I totally disagree with you. There's sooo many things you can do to the phone after rooting Wink

Wow...

Breaking news....Unrooted is ACTUALLY better for your phone....

Tongue

Bit of UK pantomime talk here....."Oh NO it's not!!"

Without Root, your phone is standard, not better. As anyone will say, Root allows so much more to be done on your device.

I think you are confused.com?

My bad.
Maybe I phrased my sentence wrong, but what I meant was an unrooted android phone is still better than a jailbroken iphone. I am now running DeFrost, but since it is a new release (5.2 ?) , so many bugs. Still I plan to flash a different rom next week.
